The Ten Conditions of Bai'at (pledge of allegiance or initiation) were established by Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, the founder of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, on January 12, 1889. They serve as the foundational moral, spiritual, and social framework that every Ahmadi Muslim pledges to follow upon entering the community.
The Ten Conditions:
1. Abstaining from Shirk
The initiate solemnly promises to completely refrain from Shirk (associating partners with God) in His entity, attributes, or worship right up to the day of their death.
Refraining from Sins and Passions
2. The initiate shall keep away from falsehood, fornication/adultery, trespasses of the eye, debauchery, dissipation, cruelty, dishonesty, mischief, and rebellion, and shall not allow themselves to be carried away by worldly or lustful passions.
3. Regularity in Worship and Prayers
The initiate shall regularly offer the five daily prayers (Salat) according to the commandments of God and the Prophet Muhammad. They shall try their best to be regular in offering pre-dawn prayers (Tahajjud), invoking blessings (Darood) upon the Holy Prophet, seeking forgiveness (Istighfar), and praising God daily.
4. Harm to None
The initiate shall cause no harm whatsoever to God’s creation in general, and Muslims in particular, neither by tongue, hand, nor any other means, regardless of emotional impulse.
Fidelity and Submission to God
5. The initiate shall remain faithful to God in all conditions of life—in joy and sorrow, prosperity and trial—and remain completely resigned to the decree of Allah, ready to face any suffering or hardship in His path.
6. Following Islamic Principles over Custom
The initiate shall refrain from following un-Islamic customs or personal desires, and shall completely submit to the authority of the Holy Qur'an, making the Word of God and the Sunnah (teachings/sayings) of the Prophet Muhammad the guiding principle in every aspect of life.
7. Eradication of Pride and Vanity
The initiate shall entirely give up pride and arrogance, passing their life in humbleness, cheerfulness, forbearance, and meekness.
8. Prioritizing Faith Above Worldly Ties
The initiate shall hold faith, the honor of faith, and the cause of Islam dearer than their own life, wealth, honor, children, and all other loved ones.
9. Service to Humanity
The initiate shall keep occupied in the service of God’s creation solely for His sake, and shall endeavor toward the welfare and benefit of mankind to the best of their God-given abilities.
10. Bond of Brotherhood and Obedience
The initiate shall enter into a dedicated bond of spiritual brotherhood with the Promised Messiah, pledging obedience in everything good (Ma'ruf) for the sake of Allah until death, maintaining a level of devotion unseen in ordinary worldly relationships.
