*Two jailed, another remanded over GHC2M gold robbery at Obuasi*
Police in the Ashanti South Region have arrested and secured the conviction of two men over the robbery of a gold dealer in Obuasi, recovering stolen gold and cash worth about 2.29 million cedis.
The Ashanti South Regional Police Commander, DCOP/Mr Joseph Nyaaba, said the incident occurred on 3 April when the victim, identified as Abdul Malik Yahaya, was attacked while returning home on a motorbike.
Brief facts
Police said two suspects on a tricycle, locally known as a “Pragya”, rammed into the victim along the Obuasi-Asonkore road, causing him to fall and sustain injuries before robbing him of gold valued at 1.75 million cedis and cash of 540,000 cedis.
Acting on intelligence, police arrested four suspects on April 8, including Rashid Adams and Godfred Ampadu, both aged 19, as well as Dominic Naazie, 23.
Investigations revealed that Rashid Adams allegedly drove the tricycle used in the attack, while Godfred Ampadu assisted in carrying out the robbery.
Police said the suspects led officers to a location where the stolen gold was hidden under a cement block in a bush, and also recovered a vehicle believed to have been purchased with proceeds from the robbery.
Authorities added that one of the suspects, Dominic Naazie, was an employee of the victim and allegedly provided insider information used to plan the attack.
By court
Three suspects were put before the Bekwai Circuit Court on charges including robbery and conspiracy.
Two of them pleaded guilty and were convicted on their own plea, with one sentenced to 30 years for robbery and 20 years for conspiracy, while the second received 25 years for robbery and 20 years for conspiracy, with sentences to run concurrently.
A third suspect pleaded not guilty and has been remanded to reappear in court on April 24.
Police said the operation underscores efforts to tackle violent crime in the region and urged the public to support law enforcement with information.
