PRESIDENT MAHAMA LIFTS BAN ON SALE OF STATE LANDS.
GaDaŋme Lands Under Threat of Political and Influential Grabbing!
The recent decision by President Mahama to lift the ban on the sale of state lands has ignited a fierce debate across Ghana. Introduced in January 2025, the ban aimed to revamp the land administration system and address its inherent weaknesses. However, critics argue that this move will disproportionately benefit politicians and influential individuals, who will exploit state lands for personal gain.
I share these concerns, particularly given the legislative instrument used to lift the ban, which raises questions about the government's motivations. The GaDaŋme lands are especially susceptible to exploitation, with many fearing that powerful interests will seize control. Although the Lands Commission has initiated steps to implement the Land Act, 2020 (Act 1036), I worry that this may undermine the Act's intent.
Stakeholder consultations have been held nationwide, but I remain skeptical about their sincerity. These consultations may be mere lip service, masking the government's true intentions. The implications of this decision are far-reaching, and it's essential to consider the potential consequences on Ghana's land ownership landscape.
With the average price of land for sale in Ghana being around GH₵60,000 per plot, it's likely that wealthy individuals and corporations will be the primary beneficiaries of this decision. As the debate rages on, it's crucial to keep a close eye on the unfolding consequences of this move. Will the government's decision lead to increased economic growth, or will it exacerbate existing social and economic inequalities? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain – the fate of Ghana's land ownership landscape hangs in the balance.
As I eagerly await the unfolding consequences of this move in the coming months and years, I urge all stakeholders to remain vigilant and ensure that the government's decision serves the best interests of the Ghanaian people, rather than just a select few.
