PRESIDENT MAHAMA LIFTS BAN ON SALE OF STATE LANDS.

GaDaŋme Lands Under Threat of Political and Influential Grabbing!

The recent decision by President Mahama to lift the ban on the sale of state lands has ignited a fierce debate across Ghana. Introduced in January 2025, the ban aimed to revamp the land administration system and address its inherent weaknesses. However, critics argue that this move will disproportionately benefit politicians and influential individuals, who will exploit state lands for personal gain.

I share these concerns, particularly given the legislative instrument used to lift the ban, which raises questions about the government's motivations. The GaDaŋme lands are especially susceptible to exploitation, with many fearing that powerful interests will seize control. Although the Lands Commission has initiated steps to implement the Land Act, 2020 (Act 1036), I worry that this may undermine the Act's intent.

Stakeholder consultations have been held nationwide, but I remain skeptical about their sincerity. These consultations may be mere lip service, masking the government's true intentions. The implications of this decision are far-reaching, and it's essential to consider the potential consequences on Ghana's land ownership landscape.

With the average price of land for sale in Ghana being around GH₵60,000 per plot, it's likely that wealthy individuals and corporations will be the primary beneficiaries of this decision. As the debate rages on, it's crucial to keep a close eye on the unfolding consequences of this move. Will the government's decision lead to increased economic growth, or will it exacerbate existing social and economic inequalities? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain – the fate of Ghana's land ownership landscape hangs in the balance.

As I eagerly await the unfolding consequences of this move in the coming months and years, I urge all stakeholders to remain vigilant and ensure that the government's decision serves the best interests of the Ghanaian people, rather than just a select few.

OPEN LETTER TO THE MINISTER OF GENDER, CHILDREN AND SOCIAL PROTECTION

CALL FOR REVIEW OF SCHOOL FEEDING ALLOCATION PER CHILD

Hon Dr. Naa Momo Lartey,

I respectfully write to bring to your attention an issue of great concern that requires your urgent consideration and intervention. Your office has consistently demonstrated commitment to the welfare of the people of Ghana, and it is in this spirit that I appeal for your attention and leadership in addressing this matter.

The Ghana School Feeding Programme is indeed a commendable and visionary initiative aimed at improving school enrolment, attendance, and the nutritional well-being of our children. It remains one of the most impactful social protection programmes in the country, and for this reason, it must be given the necessary attention to ensure that it achieves its intended purpose.

However, one critical challenge continues to undermine the effectiveness of the programme: the current allocation of two Ghana cedis (GHS 2.00) per child per meal. Respectfully, this amount is woefully inadequate in today’s economy. It is impractical to expect caterers to provide a nutritious, balanced, and wholesome meal for a child at that rate, given the high cost of foodstuffs, transportation, and other overheads.

This situation has unfortunately resulted in caterers being forced to compromise on quality, often resorting to preparing meals that neither meet nutritional standards nor satisfy the appetites of our schoolchildren. The consequences are worrying; Children consume food that lacks the essential nutrients needed for their physical and mental development, while caterers themselves struggle to break even, thereby undermining the sustainability of the programme.

In reality, no parent in Ghana today would intentionally subject his or her own child to a meal budgeted at two cedis (GHS 2.00). If we cannot accept this standard for our children at home, then we should not allow the same for children in our public schools especially those who depend heavily on the programme for their daily nourishment.

Honourable Minister, if the Ghana School Feeding Programme must be done, it must be done well. It is therefore imperative that the Ministry urgently reviews and adjusts the allocation per child per meal to reflect current economic realities. A revision will not only ensure that our schoolchildren enjoy balanced and nutritious meals but also enable caterers to operate efficiently, with value for their service and commitment.

I therefore appeal to your good office and together with the National School Feeding Programme Secretariat and all Regional Coordinators, to treat this matter with the urgency it deserves. The health and future of our children and by extension the nation depend on it.

Respectfully submitted

Nii Ayitey Armah
