In the Gold Coast’s colonial era, the former seat of government was closely linked to its network of coastal castles, built by Europeans for trade and later used as administrative centers. Among them, the Christiansborg Castle in Osu, Accra, became the official residence of colonial governors and the political heart of British rule. In 1961, after Ghana’s independence, Queen Elizabeth II visited the castle during her state visit, marking a symbolic moment where the former colonial stronghold hosted the British monarch under a sovereign Ghanaian government.
