THE SUSPENSION OF WIKE FROM PDP - A WELCOME DEVELOPMENT

The expulsion of Nyesom Wike from the Peoples Democratic Party is not just a welcome development but a necessary turning point for the survival of democratic order in Nigeria. For years Wike has acted as a déstabilizing force within the party that built his political identity. Instead of strengthening the PDP, he repeatedly dragged it into internal chaos, endless court actions, and personal battles that weakened the party at its core. His long standing pattern of confrontation and disruption made it clear that the PDP could not move forward as long as it remained under the shadow of one individual wh0 believed he was above collective discipline.

No politician is greater than the party, and Wikes attempt to operate as a 0ne man institution finally met the résistance it deserved. His decision to serve in a powerful position(FCT minister )within the APC government while still insisting on rélevance within the PDP stands as one of the m0st embarrassing contradictions in our political history. It insulted loyal members and mocked the very idea of party identity. Such behavior undermines the democratic foundation of political parties and encourages opportunism that threatens the stability of our political system.

Equally disturbing is Wikes visible closeness with certain actors within the Nigerian judiciary building houses for júdgés, Nigerians are raising eyebrows as court decisions repeatedly mirror outcomes that seem to align with his political !nterests (fubara as a case study)This situation, whether intentional or not, has created a dangerous perception that the judiciary may no longer be insulated from political influence. When citizens begin to doubt the fairness of the courts, the entire democratic structure trembles, because the judiciary is supposed to be the final refuge for justice and public trust.

“What happened between Minister Wike and the officer is unfortunate. When he got there, the officer explained that he was simply obeying orders given to him. Wike should not have exchanged words with the officer; he ought to have addressed his concerns through the officer’s superiors.

“He (Wike) is our colleague, and Wike could have reached out to us to resolve whatever issue. The officer’s action was lawful—he was trained to be disciplined, loyal, and obedient to orders. Therefore, the young officer only carried out his duty worthy of commendation.

“He did not commit any offence under military regulations; he merely obeyed a lawful order and followed due process. If you observe carefully, he spoke respectfully and conducted himself properly.

“There is, therefore, no offence under military law for which he should be charged. Wike should not have engaged him in an altercation, especially out of respect for the uniform he was wearing. Anyone who disrespects a soldier indirectly disrespects the President, who is the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. There is, therefore, no basis for any punishment against the officer.

“This is not about supporting the military to act disrespectfully toward civilians. The Minister should understand that every officer has superiors. I gathered that he called the Chief of Defence Staff, who advised him to wait for an investigation.

“However, he did not wait and instead went straight to the site. As a leader, he ought to have exercised patience and waited for the outcome of the investigation.

“Wike also contacted the Chief of Naval Staff, who assured him that an investigation would be conducted. Yet again, he did not wait. It was supposed to be a one-day inquiry, but he chose to go there and confront them.
