FLOODING ON NSAWAM-POKUASI HIGHWAY LEAVES COMMUTERS STRANDED AFTER HEAVY RAINS.

A torrential downpour on Friday, September 12, left portions of the Nsawam–Pokuase highway submerged, causing severe traffic disruptions and leaving commuters stranded for hours.

The rainfall, which lasted several hours, led to flooding on key sections of the road, making movement difficult for motorists. Some drivers were forced to park by the roadside, while others risked navigating through the floodwaters.

Passengers waiting at bus stops along the stretch were also stranded, with many voicing frustration over what they described as a persistent problem whenever heavy rains occur.

Local residents attributed the flooding to poor drainage systems and unchecked construction along waterways, calling on city authorities to act swiftly to address the situation.

No casualties were recorded, but the incident has once again highlighted Accra’s vulnerability to flooding during the rainy season.

MORE THAN 100,000 JOIN TOMMY ROBINSON RALLY, AS COUNTER-PROTESTERS DEMONSTRATE.

More than 100,000 people have joined a march in central London organised by far-right activist Tommy Robinson, with a counter-protest by anti-racism campaigners also taking place.

The "Unite the Kingdom" rally gathered at Waterloo before heading to Whitehall where they heard speeches, including from tech billionaire Elon Musk.

While the first half of the day was largely peaceful, the Metropolitan Police later said officers had faced "unacceptable violence", with projectiles thrown at them. Nine people have been arrested.

Meanwhile, about 5,000 people joined the nearby counter-protest organised by Stand Up To Racism (SUTR).

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood condemned "those who have attacked and injured police officers".

"Anyone taking part in criminal activity will face the full force of the law," she said.

Some 1,000 Met officers were deployed ahead of the protest and were bolstered by an extra 500 officers from other police forces including Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire and Devon and Cornwall.

Around mid-afternoon, the two demonstrations were divided on Whitehall by a line of police officers.

While the majority of the group protested peacefully, the Met said some officers had been attacked while trying to keep the two groups apart.

"Officers are having to intervene in multiple locations to stop Unite the Kingdom protesters trying to access sterile areas, breach police cordons or get to opposing groups," the Met said on X.

"A number of officers have been assaulted."

Into the evening extra riot police could be seen rushing through the crowd to back up the horses and officers holding lines between the two groups.

Projectiles were thrown at officers from Unite the Kingdom protesters who had gathered near Trafalgar Square.

"When officers moved in to stop them they faced unacceptable violence," the Met said in a statement.

"They were assaulted with kicks and punches. Bottles, flares and other projectiles were thrown."

At one point, a glass bottle appeared to smash against a horse, causing the animal and rider to stagger backwards.

Scuffles broke out as police used batons to try and push back Robinson supporters gathered on the top of Whitehall and Trafalgar Square.

Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, addressed the crowds at the "freedom of speech festival" where he criticised politicians for "parroting" his ideas.

He also claimed UK courts had decided the rights of undocumented migrants superseded those of the "local community".

Last month, the Court of Appeal overturned an injunction blocking asylum seekers being housed at The Bell Hotel in Epping, Ess*x.

Making a surprise appearance via videolink, Musk spoke about "massive uncontrolled migration" and called for a "change of government" in the UK.

"Something's got to be done," Musk said as he was interviewed by Robinson.

"There's got to be a dissolution of Parliament and a new vote held."

TV presenter Katie Hopkins also spoke on stage after earlier appearing alongside Robinson, Lawrence Fox and Ant Middleton at the front of the march at the start near Waterloo station.

At the Stand Up To Racism rally, independent MP Diane Abbott told demonstrators: "We know racism and violence and fascism is not new.

"But you know what? We have always defeated that racism and violence."

Ahead of the march, the Met confirmed it would not be using live facial recognition - which captures people's faces in real-time CCTV cameras - in its policing of the Unite the Kingdom march.

It also said there were "particular concerns" among some in London's Muslim communities ahead of Robinson's protest, citing a "record of anti-Muslim rhetoric and incidents of offensive chanting by a minority at previous marches".

The Met said that it had ordered the Unite the Kingdom rally to end by 18:00 and the counter-protest to end by 16:00, in line with when the organisers told the force they expected speeches to end.

Robinson was released from prison earlier this year after being jailed in October for ignoring an order not to repeat false claims about a Syrian refugee, who had successfully sued him for libel.

NEPAL PARLIAMENT SET ON FIRE AFTER PM RESIGNS OVER ANTI-CORRUPTION PROTESTS.

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has resigned amid Nepal's worst unrest in decades, as public anger mounts over the deaths of 19 anti-corruption protesters in clashes with police on Monday.

On Tuesday, crowds set fire to parliament in the capital Kathmandu, sending thick black smoke billowing into the sky. Government buildings and the houses of political leaders were attacked around the country.

Three more deaths were reported on Tuesday. Amid the chaos, jail officials said 900 inmates managed to escape from two prisons in Nepal's western districts.

The demonstrations were triggered by a ban on social media platforms. It was lifted on Monday - but by then protests had swelled into a mass movement.

Nepal's army chief issued a statement late on Tuesday accusing demonstrators of taking advantage of the current crisis by damaging, looting and setting fire to public and private property.

It said if unrest continued, "all security institutions, including the Nepal Army, are committed to taking control of the situation," effective from 22:00 local time (16:15 GMT; 17:15 BST), without detailing what this might entail.

MANDELSON CALLED EPSTEIN 'BEST PAL' IN BIRTHDAY MESSAGE.

Lord Mandelson called the late convicted pa******le Jeffrey Epstein his "best pal", according to a letter in an alleged "birthday book" that has been released by US lawmakers.

In the message for Epstein's 50th birthday in 2003, Lord Mandelson - UK ambassador to the US since last year - describes him as an "intelligent, sharp-witted man", who "parachuted" into his life.

The existence of the letter from Lord Mandelson was first reported by the Wall Street Journal in July, when the newspaper published details of the alleged birthday note.

An official spokesperson for Lord Mandelson told the BBC: "Lord Mandelson has long been clear that he very much regrets ever having been introduced to Epstein."

Democrats in Congress released copies of the so-called "birthday book" after the documents were subpoenaed by the House Oversight Committee last month.

The documents also include a note featuring a drawing of a woman's body allegedly signed by US President Donald Trump. The White House on Monday denied its authenticity and said the president "did not draw this picture, and he did not sign it".

The "birthday book" was put together by Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein's British co-conspirator and ex-girlfriend who was convicted in 2021 of conspiring to traffic girls for s*x. It is dated three years before allegations of s*x abuse by Epstein became public in 2006.

When approached by the Media, Lord Mandelson's spokesperson said that his connection to Epstein "has been a matter of public record for some time".

The spokesperson also referred to previous comments Mandelson made to the Financial Times, in which he said: "I regret ever meeting him or being introduced to him by his partner Ghislaine Maxwell."

The Media has also approached the Foreign Office for comment.

A 2019 internal report by JP Morgan bank, filed to a New York court in 2023, said that Epstein kept a "particularly close relationship with Prince Andrew, the Duke of York and Lord Peter Mandelson, a senior member of the British government".

In the "birthday book" letter, former Labour cabinet minister Lord Mandelson writes that after Epstein appeared in his life, he "would spend many hours just waiting for him to turn up".

"And often, no sooner were you getting used to having him around, you would suddenly be alone... again, leaving you with some 'interesting' friends to entertain instead."

The letter then includes a photo of Lord Mandelson with two women, whose faces are obscured.

Lord Mandelson continues: "But wherever he is in the world, he remains my best pal!"

Following a photo of Mandelson sat with Epstein, he concludes: "Happy Birthday, Jeffrey. We love you!"

Along with the book, lawmakers also released a trove of documents that include Epstein's personal address book and his will.

After the Wall Street Journal first reported on the existence of the "birthday book", Trump filed a lawsuit against the newspaper's reporters, publisher and executives, including News Corp's owner Rupert Murdoch, seeking $10bn (£7.4bn) in damages.

Epstein was first criminally indicted in 2006 in Florida on a state felony charge of solicitation of prostitution. He died in prison in 2019 while awaiting trial.

AUSTRALIAN TRIPLE MURDERER JAILED FOR LIFE OVER TOXIC MUSHROOM LUNCH

An Australian woman has been jailed for life, with no chance of release for at least 33 years, for murdering three relatives and trying to kill another with a toxic mushroom meal.

The jail term, one of the longest ever handed to a female offender in Australia, means Erin Patterson, 50, will be in her 80s before she can apply for parole.

A Supreme Court judge said Patterson's crimes were the "worst category" for offending and involved an "elaborate cover-up".

Patterson killed her in-laws Don and Gail Patterson, both 70, and Gail's sister Heather Wilkinson, 66, after serving them a toxic beef Wellington at her home in Victoria in 2023.

Heather's husband Ian Wilkinson, a local pastor, survived the lunch after recovering from a coma and has ongoing health issues related to the poisoning.

Patterson's estranged husband Simon Patterson was meant to attend the lunch too but cancelled at the last minute, in part due to his belief that his wife had been trying to poison him for years.

Patterson has long maintained her innocence, saying the toxic death cap mushrooms in the dish she prepared were accidentally added and that she never intended to harm her relatives.

She will serve three consecutive life sentences for the three murders and 25 years for the attempted murder of Mr Wilkinson.

During his sentencing remarks, Justice Christopher Beale said the gravity of Patterson's crimes meant he must impose the "maximum penalty".

Prosecutors had argued that the mother-of-two should be sentenced to life in jail with no prospect of release - the harshest punishment available in Australia.

Justice Beale agreed the crimes were the worst of their kind, but said his decision to allow parole was influenced by the "harsh prison conditions" Patterson faces in jail - including 15 months spent in solitary confinement so far, and the "substantial chance" that she could face more for her safety.

The judge noted that Patterson's reputation and the high-level of media and public interest in her case meant she would likely "remain a notorious prisoner for many years to come, and, as such, remain at significant risk from other prisoners".

He further described Patterson's current jail conditions in a female maximum security prison, where she spends 22 hours a day in her cell with no contact with other inmates due to her "major offender status".

Justice Beale pointed out that the prosecution had not alleged a motive for Patterson's crimes during the nine-week murder trial, which wrapped up two months ago, and that he would not either.

"Only you know why you committed them," he said, in reference to the three murders and the attempted murder. "I will not be speculating about that matter."

The judge said Patterson "showed no pity" for her victims in the days after the lunch, as those who had eaten her toxic meal fought for their lives in hospital.

"Your failure to exhibit any remorse poured salt in all the victims' wounds," he told the court.

Outside the court, Ian Wilkinson, the sole survivor of the fatal lunch, spoke publicly for the first time about the ordeal that tore his family apart.

He thanked the police and prosecutors who worked on the case as well as the countless medical staff who treated the victims and himself in the days after the lunch.

"I would like to encourage everybody to be kind to each other," Mr Wilkinson said.

At a pre-sentence hearing a fortnight ago, Wilkinson described feeling "half-alive" after the death of his "beautiful wife" and losing his two best friends.

The high-level of scrutiny and interest in Patterson's case culminated at Monday's sentencing, with the court deciding for the first time in its history to allow a TV camera into the courtroom so that the proceedings could be broadcast live.

Previously, only in-house cameras have livestreamed sentencings.

Patterson has 28 days to lodge an appeal against her sentence, as well as the guilty verdicts for triple murder and one of attempted murder.

SOUTH KOREANS DETAINED IN ICE RAID AT HYUNDAI PLANT IN GEORGIA

US immigration authorities have raided a massive Hyundai factory in Georgia, leading to the arrest of over 450 people, according to one of the agencies involved in the operation.

The 3,000-acre site, which was built by the Korean automobile manufacturer to make electric vehicles, had been operational for a year.

The Department of Homeland Security told the BBC that agents executed a search warrant due to allegations of "unlawful employment practices and other serious federal crimes".

Korean nationals were among those detained, the South Korean foreign ministry said, calling it an "unjust infringement" of their rights.

Hyundai Motor Company said it was aware of the incident at the HL-GA Battery Company construction site and was "working to understand the specific circumstances".

"As of today, it is our understanding that none of those detained is directly employed by Hyundai Motor Company," it said in statement. "We prioritize the safety and well-being of everyone working at the site."

In a post on X, the Atlanta office of the Bureau of Alcohol, To***co, Fi****ms and Explosives said it joined a number of other agencies including ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) to arrest 450 "unlawful aliens" at the plant in Bryan County.

It is unclear how many South Koreans were detained but some reports suggest it was in the hundreds.

"The economic activities of Korean investment companies and the rights and interests of Korean citizens must not be unfairly infringed upon during US law enforcement operations," the foreign ministry statement said.

The ministry added that it was dispatching diplomats to the site.

"In Seoul, we also conveyed our concerns and regrets today through the US Embassy in Korea and urged them to exercise extreme caution to ensure that the legitimate rights and interests of Korean citizens are not infringed upon."

At a press conference on Friday, an official with the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) "there was a majority of Korean nationals from the 475" people detained.

"They are in the custody of ICE enforcement and removal operations," Special Agent Steve Schrank said, adding that they were taken to a processing facility in Folkston, Georgia.

"They will be moved based on the individual circumstances beyond that," the official said. "This in fact was the largest single-site enforcement operation in the history of homeland security investigations."

ICE officials said the operation was the result of a "multi-month criminal investigation, where we have developed evidence, conducted interviews, gathered documents, and presented that evidence to the court in order to obtain an official search warrant."

Videos on social media show agents lining workers up, telling them they have a warrant to search the facility. The agents can also be seen talking to some of the workers in the videos.

South Korean companies have promised to invest billions of dollars in key US industries in the coming years, partly as a way to avoid tariffs.

The state's governor, Republican Brian Kemp, had touted Hyundai's new electric vehicle operation as the biggest economic development project in the state's history, employing 1,200 people.

The search by federal agencies had also shut down construction on an adjacent battery plant, CBS News reports.

President Trump campaigned for his second term in office on the back of a pledge to carry out mass deportations of undocumented immigrants although he said the priority would be those who committed crimes.

PUTIN REJECTS WESTERN SECURITY IN UKRAINE, WARNING TROOPS WOULD BE TARGET PUTIN REJECTS WESTERN SECURITY IN UKRAINE, WARNING TROOPS WOULD BE TARGET.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has rejected Western proposals for a "reassurance force" in Ukraine the day after any ceasefire comes into place, following a Paris summit aimed at finalising plans for security guarantees.

French President Emmanuel Macron said 26 of Ukraine's allies had formally committed to deploying troops "by land, sea or air" to help provide security the moment fighting was brought to a halt.

He did not detail any of the countries involved.

Putin sought to quash the allies' initiative, with a warning that any troops deployed to Ukraine would be "legitimate targets", especially if they appeared now, even though there are no plans for an immediate deployment.

Story: GHANA URGENTLY NEEDS ORGAN HARVESTING LAW - KORLE BU CEO.

Chief Executive of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Dr. Yakubu Seidu Adam, has called on Parliament to expedite the passage of legislation on organ harvesting, arguing that such a move would significantly cut the cost of transplants for patients in Ghana.

Addressing members of Parliament’s Health Committee during their visit to the hospital on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, Dr. Seidu Adam said the absence of a legal framework compels patients in need of organ transplants to seek treatment abroad, even though Ghana has qualified specialists capable of performing the procedures.

“With our own population, if they need a kidney transplant, they have to travel to India, America, or the UK. We have the expertise here to do the work, if only the legislative approval is given,” he explained.

Dr. Adam added that the lack of legislation also hampers eye surgeries, particularly cornea transplants.

“As eye surgeons, we perform cornea transplants, but we cannot get corneas locally. We have to import them from America, where the lowest price is between $3,000 and $4,000. If we had the legislation, we could harvest corneas here, and a patient would not spend more than GH₵500,” he noted.

His appeal adds to mounting pressure on lawmakers to create a regulatory framework for organ donation and harvesting in Ghana, a move health experts say would improve access to life-saving procedures and reduce costs for patients.

"IMMEDIATELY ARREST AND INVESTIGATE CHIEF SOFO AZORKA" - NPP ORDERS IGP.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has ordered the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, to immediately arrest and investigate NDC National Vice Chairman Chief Sofo Azorka, popularly known as Chairman Azorka.

The NPP also called for the arrest of NDC’s Abuakwa North Constituency Communications Officer, Abdul Wahab Amadu, for threatening violence and assaulting party officials during the polls.

According to the NPP, such violent conduct by a National Officer of the ruling party and a constituency officer diminishes the gains of Ghana’s democracy.

The NPP statement, signed by NPP General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua, stated, “The New Patriotic Party condemns the threats of death against the Minority Leader, Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin; the National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye; and Hon. Frank Annor Dompreh by the 1st National Vice Chairman of the NDC, Chief Sofo Azorka, and Alhaji Abdul Wahab Amadu, the Abuakwa North Constituency communication officer of the NDC.

The Party further condemns the unprovoked physical attack of its 3rd National Vice Chairman, Alhaji Osman Masawudu, by Chief Sofo Azorka and his notorious hoodlums”.

The statement continued, “Such violent conduct by no means a person than a National Officer of the ruling party and a constituency officer diminishes the gains of our democracy and has the potential to create further insecurity in the country in the face of Ghana’s recent decline in the Global Peace Index Ranking.

The Party will formally lodge complaints with the Ghana Police Service against the mentioned individuals.

We are also calling on the Inspector General of Police, as part of his post-election actions, to immediately arrest and investigate Chief Sofo Azorka, Alhaji Abdul Wahab and any other person captured in the videos widely circulated in the media.

The recklessness of the actions of Chief Sofo Azorka and Alhaji Abdul Wahab ought to be properly investigated and punished”.

The NPP demands come on the heels of the National Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Chief Sofo Azorka, who has expressed anger over an unannounced visit by the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, to the NDC party office during the ongoing Akwatia by-election.

Afenyo-Markin’s visit to the NDC office sparked a heated exchange between NDC members and the entourage of the Minority Leader.

NDC supporters alleged that the NPP’s Afenyo-Markin and his team stormed the NDC office to remove some posters of their candidate.

According to Azorka, Afenyo-Markin, the NPP is trying to use undemocratic strategies.

He further warned Alexander Afenyo-Markin that a by-election will be held in Afenyo-Markin’s constituency if he tries anything.

Speaking to the media, Chief Sofo Azorka stated, “Wallahi, we go do by-election in his hometown.”

“Fiang Fiang what does he want here? Is he the NDC secretary? You people should talk to them. You are coming to our office to do what? You people are journalists, talk to them, this is not parliament that he will be talking anyhow, here is a freedom field our eyes are red”, he added.

Meanwhile, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the minority leader, has replied, the National Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Chief Sofo Azorka, who threatened him.

According to Afenyo Markin, he would not abandon the Akwatia by-election and return to Accra due to Sofo Azorka’s death threats.

Afenyo Markin further called on NPP members not to tremble in fear of violence and to join the monitoring process.

Speaking to the media, Afenyo-Markin stated, “I’ve heard the NDC’s Vice Chairman, Sofo Azorka, is on radio and TV speaking against me and threatening to kill me. Well, that’s his own issue. What I know is that he and his Azorka boys are known for going about and killing people, and this is not his first time issuing threats, but I am not a coward.

“So, I want to tell the NPP leaders in Accra that the time is just 2 PM, and it’s not too late yet. We have foot soldiers on the ground. So, the rants of Azorka should not frighten anyone to sit in their rooms back in Accra out of fear. Politics is not conducted out of fear; it is done with courage,” he said.

The Minority Leader added, “Our forebears who established the party, the likes of JB Danquah and others, went to jail. Some of them died in jail. So, let nobody be scared. From what I have witnessed in Akwatia, the dedication and sacrifice by our youth give me hope that in 2028, if we work in unity, victory will be ours.”

“So, I will not abandon here and run to Accra while our foot soldiers are here working because Sofo Azorka says he will kill me, so I am running away. If he says he will kill me, he should go ahead and kill me.

As a human, once you die, that’s it. So, if he claims to have the strength to kill, so be it,” he stated.

MAHAMA'S REMARKS ON THE OFANKOR-NSAWAM ROAD PROJECT ARE A MISREPRESENTATION OF FACTS - NPP MP.

Member of Parliament for Bantama Francis Asemso-Boakye, who served as Roads and Highways Minister, has refuted claims made by President John Dramani Mahama regarding the ongoing Ofankor-Nsawam road project.

The President’s remarks questioning the project’s funding and progress have been labelled by the former minister as a “misrepresentation of well-established facts”.

He stated that the total contract sum for the road is $346.4 million.

Of this, the government secured a $200 million facility from Afreximbank, intended as a partial funding instrument, not to cover the entire cost.

The remaining funds were to be sourced from government budgetary allocations, the Bantama MP said.

“For the President to question… ‘a loan was taken for the project, so why is the money finished and the road undone?’ is misleading,” a government statement released today read.

“He knows very well, as the handing-over notes clearly state, unless he has been wrongly briefed, that the Afreximbank facility did not represent the full financing requirement of the project.”

President John Dramani Mahama on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, visited two project sites.

The visit followed recent public agitation over delays attributed to unpaid arrears.
Raising concerns about the project’s financing, President Mahama questioned how earlier funds were exhausted before completion.

“A loan was taken for this project. I don’t understand why the money is finished and the project is not over. We’re having to pay a supplementary amount, equivalent to almost $78 million from Government of Ghana funds,” he said.

“We need to find out what happened. Was the estimate not done properly, or what went wrong?”

But Mr Aseno-Boakye described the remarks of the President as inaccurate.

He further urged Ghanaians to “disregard these political distortions,” emphasising that this is “not the time to play politics with infrastructure.”

He maintained that the project’s financing plan was transparent from the outset, and any suggestion that the Afreximbank loan was meant to complete the entire project is inaccurate.

The statement concluded by calling for a focus on “facts, transparency, and steady progress”.

Read his statement below

Statement on President Mahama’s Comments Regarding the Ofankor–Nsawam Road Project

President John Mahama’s comments, today, during his inspection of the Ofankor–Nsawam Road Project are yet another unfortunate attempt to misrepresent well-established facts for political benefits.

The truth is clear and documented. The total contract sum for the rehabilitation of the 33km Ofankor–Nsawam dual carriageway is $346.4 million. Out of this amount, Government of Ghana secured a $200 million facility from Afreximbank to support the financing of the project, not to cover it in its entirety. The Afreximbank facility was always intended to be a partial financing instrument, with the balance to be funded from government budgetary allocations.

For the President to question that; “… a loan was taken for the project, so why is the money finished and the road undone,” is misleading, with the greatest of respect to the president. He knows very well, as the handing-over notes clearly state, unless he has been wrongly briefed, that the Afreximbank facility did not represent the full financing requirement of the project.

We urge all well-meaning Ghanaians to disregard these political distortions.

This is not the time to play politics with infrastructure. It is a time for facts, transparency, and steady progress geared towards the future and development of our beloved country, Ghana.
