Day 2: What is AI? A Brief Overview of Artificial Intelligence
Hello, everyone!
Today, we begin our deep dive into the world of artificial intelligence (AI) by answering a fundamental question: What is AI?
At its core, AI refers to the simulation of human intelligence in machines that are programmed to think and learn like humans. These intelligent machines can perform tasks that typically require human intelligence, such as visual perception, speech recognition, decision-making, and language translation.
AI is broadly categorised into two types:
Narrow AI (weak AI): This type of AI is designed to perform a specific task. Examples include voice assistants like Siri and Alexa, recommendation systems on platforms like Netflix and Amazon, and even autonomous vehicles. Narrow AI systems are highly specialised and do not possess general intelligence or understanding.
General AI (Strong AI): This is a more advanced form of AI that possesses the ability to understand, learn, and apply intelligence across a wide range of tasks, much like a human. General AI remains largely theoretical and has not yet been achieved. It represents the ultimate goal for many researchers in the field of AI.
The development of AI relies on several key technologies and concepts, including:
Machine learning is a subset of AI that focuses on the development of algorithms that allow computers to learn from and make predictions based on data. This is the driving force behind many of the of the AI applications we see today.
Neural Networks: Inspired by the human brain, these are computing systems designed to recognise patterns and interpret sensory data through machine perception, labelling, and clustering of raw input.
Natural Language Processing (NLP): This enables machines to understand and respond to human language in a way that is both valuable and meaningful.
AI is not just a technological advancement; it represents a paradigm shift in how we approach problem-solving and innovation. By leveraging the power of AI, we can tackle complex challenges, improve efficiencies, and create new opportunities across various domains.
In the coming days, we will explore how AI is being applied in different sectors, its benefits, and the challenges it presents. Join us tomorrow as we dive into the history of AI and its key milestones.
