The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has apprehended a suspect, identified as Atampugri Akanyani, for unlawful possession of 713 slabs of suspected narcotic drugs following an operation at Asanso in the Ashanti Region.

The suspect, who is the driver of a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter bus with registration number AC 718-25, was arrested on January 26, 2026, during a snap check duty at the Asanso checkpoint.

A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of nine nylon sacks containing dried leaves suspected to be narcotic drugs, which were concealed in the bus. The sacks were opened, revealing the compressed slabs.

During the arrest, the suspect allegedly attempted to bribe the officers with GH¢150,000.00, which was declined.

The suspect is currently in police custody assisting investigations, while efforts continue to trace the source of the suspected narcotic drugs and identify other persons connected to the offence.

Former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta is scheduled to appear before a U.S. court on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, to address alleged immigration infractions. According to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Mr. Ofori-Atta has exceeded his visitor visa duration, resulting in the loss of his legal status to remain in the United States.

Following the court proceedings, a determination regarding potential extradition to Ghana may be made. However, Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, has disputed claims that this case pertains to a routine visa overstay, asserting instead that Mr. Ofori-Atta's visa was formally revoked by U.S. authorities.

In an interview on Newsfile on Saturday, January 10, Dr. Ayine clarified that U.S. authorities initially granted Mr. Ofori-Atta until November 29, 2025, to depart the country, which he failed to do. He emphasized that the visa revocation was a deliberate action linked to ongoing investigations and not a standard immigration matter. "This is not exactly about immigration. His visa has not expired. It expires in February. No, it was revoked. I am telling you this on authority," Dr. Ayine stated.

The Attorney-General noted that Ghana's extradition request is connected to investigations being conducted by the Office of the Special Prosecutor in relation to the SML matter. "I have been working with the Americans diligently on him. And the visa was revoked.

And that is why he lost his immigration status in the United States," he added. Meanwhile, Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu, former Chief Executive Officer of the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre, is also slated to appear before a U.S. court on January 21, 2026, for proceedings to determine her potential extradition to Ghana.
