USA🇺🇸: Plans for $1.5 Billion Trump Tower in Queensland Cancelled Amid Brand Concerns
Plans for a $1.5 billion Trump Tower in Queensland have been cancelled, with the developer citing concerns over the Trump brand’s reception in Australia. The project, announced three months ago, was set to rise 91 stories and become the tallest building in the country.
David Young, chief executive of Altus Property Group, said the decision followed a reassessment of the partnership. “Let’s just say that with the Iran War and everything else, the Trump brand was increasingly toxic in Australia,” Young stated. He added that the split was not due to unmet obligations and that Altus intends to continue with the development under a different luxury brand.
The promotional material for the project has since been removed from the Trump Organization’s website, and the dedicated site trumpgoldcoast . com is no longer active. The original campaign featured AI-generated renderings of the proposed tower.
Public opposition also played a role in the project’s withdrawal. A petition on Change . org opposing the development gathered 140,000 signatures from Gold Coast residents. The petition cited concerns over-development, environmental impact, and strain on local infrastructure, as well as discomfort with the Trump brand itself.
Altus maintains that the broader project remains “live” and that construction will proceed without the Trump affiliation. The company said other luxury brand options are being considered for the site.
The cancellation comes after Eric Trump publicly expressed enthusiasm for the project earlier this year, describing it as an opportunity to bring “the prestige and allure of a world-class luxury brand” to Australia. Posts promoting the tower have since been deleted.
