GPGD Network Calls for Strict Observance of Homowo Noise Ban
The Graduates and Professionals of Ga-Dangme (GPGD) Network is urging residents and institutions across the Greater Accra Region to strictly observe the annual ban on drumming and noise-making ahead of the Homowo Festival.
In a statement issued in Accra today, the Network emphasized that the directive marks the beginning of a sacred period leading to the revered Homowo Festival—an important cultural celebration of the Ga-Dangme people.
The Festival, which means “hooting at hunger,” commemorates the resilience of the Ga-Dangme ancestors who overcame famine through unity and a successful harvest. The period is marked by reflection, renewal, and preparation for the planting season.
According to the GPGD Network, maintaining peace and quiet during this time is of deep cultural and spiritual significance, as excessive noise is believed to disrupt harmony and dishonour ancestral traditions.
The Network stressed that the ban is not merely symbolic but a vital practice that reinforces discipline, unity, and respect for tradition.
Young people, particularly within Ga-Dangme communities, have been advised to comply fully by avoiding noise-making, respecting traditional authorities, promoting peace, and educating others on the importance of the season.
The group also highlighted the broader national value of the Homowo Festival in promoting tourism, preserving cultural heritage, and strengthening social cohesion.
The GPGD Network is working in collaboration with the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs and is calling on all stakeholders to support a peaceful and successful Homowo season.
