WHY IS THE NDC WITH 187 FAILING TO ASSERT ITS PARLIAMENTARY AUTHORITY OVER NPP'S 88?
The NDC, with 187 to the NPP's 88, is auditioning for consensus more than the NPP did when it was 138 to the NDC's 137.
Of course, Parliament is currently not in full flow because most MPs are out and about, chasing whoever can make them catch the eye of the President for a position. When the dust settles, they will have the full complement of the house. However, that won't be enough if the Majority is not assertive and they are the ones auditioning for peace.
The NPP has its strategy. What they cannot do with numbers, they can do with aggression. Afenyo is doing a great job at that. He is the darling boy of Parliament now.
Yesterday, he made it clear that his party's position was that they should not support the appointment of Hon. Kofi Boah until he apologizes. This means that the Minority side is being run from the NPP headquarters. (Which is normal)
The moment they declined the appointment of Hon. Kofi Boah and cited the party's position, the NDC should have taken the bait to issue a marker that the Minority will indeed have their say, but the Majority would have their way. No, they went behind closed doors, discussed, and had Hon. Kofi Boah apologize.
That was the point to tell the NPP that 88 cannot dictate to 187. No, 88 had 187 begging.
For all the credit Hon. Ayariga gets for his ability to make peace, build consensus, or find a way, he should know that this Parliament does not require him to be the one compromising.
I am not for a tyrannical Majority. I believe that both sides together make the house better. However, where there is a power play, you don't need unity; the one with power must take the opportunity to exert authority.
Imagine the issue with Hon. Annor-Dompreh. There is no way in any world that NPP parliamentary leadership would publicly call on their party member to apologize to an NDC person on that issue. Even when it was 137/138, Annor-Dompreh called Mahama a curse on Ghana, and it was left to fly. In this case, he himself even admitted that the woman had apologized to him, yet Hon. Ayariga and Haruna thought the best way to go was to call out their colleague and demand that she apologize again. The NPP is never going to do that to one of their own.
Despite all they said about Mahama, can you see that they cannot get over what Hon. Kofi Boah said to Nana Addo? That's the extent to which they protect their own.
So how come suddenly, the party supposedly born out of revolution is acting like one made from the kitchen of a coward?
A lot has been said about the 1st Deputy Speaker. I'll come to him later, but when it comes to the Majority, the one to steer the wheel is Hon. Ayariga, who is the Majority. The NPP side continuously praises him for being a peacemaker while they leverage aggression to find their way.
Beyond numbers, 'shouting' is important. In fact, most of the laws of this land are passed based on who shouted the loudest "Yea! Yea!" This is not to be taken literally. The point is, if you don't dominate or you are not heard, your numerical advantage is useless.
The NPP definitely isn't feeling the disadvantage of the 88 because the 187 have become Father Christmas.
Why should Hon. Kofi Boah apologize when his approval could be brought to the plenary for voting?
The job of the NPP now is to not make things easy for the NDC, as their numbers may suggest. It is up to the NDC to prove that you can't beat the Majority.
There is no English Afenyo can speak that Ayariga cannot speak. The difference is, Afenyo, from day one, realized his mandate is to be aggressive assertive and make it difficult for the NDC whereas Ayariga thought to himself, "hhis is easy; we are brothers."
He said on Point of View yesterday that he is actually being nice and that the worst is to come, let's see how the NDC grow into this Parliament.
So far, it's the NPP running the house, and you must admire Afenyo-Markin for doing that.
He is doing a great job playing political chess tactically. The NPP made the right decision to keep him.
Early days yet, but clearly, in the first month of the 9th Parliament of the 4th Republic, it is the Afenyo-Markin’s Masterclass: he is running the House with Just 88 MPs.
