3.9-Tonne Co***ne Seizure: Parliament Set For Emergency Sitting Today

Parliament is set to reconvene today, Tuesday, September 29, for an emergency sitting following concerns over recent co***ne seizures involving consignments linked to Ghana.

The sitting follows the seizure of nearly 3.9 tonnes of co***ne at France’s Port of Dunkirk from a container reportedly shipped from Ghana.

The Minority Caucus, led by First Deputy Minority Whip and Tolon MP Habib Iddrisu, invoked Article 112(3) of the 1992 Constitution to request the extraordinary sitting.

Lawmakers are expected to seek answers from relevant state institutions on how the container was processed and cleared for export, as well as the role of agencies responsible for inspecting and monitoring such consignments.

The emergency sitting is also expected to examine possible lapses in Ghana’s customs and security systems and consider measures to strengthen the country’s fight against drug trafficking.

Prez. John Mahama Calls US Health Compact ‘Humiliating’ As Ghana Rejects Deal

President John Dramani Mahama has explained why Ghana rejected a proposed health compact from the United States, describing some of the conditions as “humiliating” and an affront to the country’s sovereignty.

Speaking at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York on Friday, September 25, the President said the proposed compact, which was intended to replace some US health funding, contained provisions that Ghana could not accept.

According to President Mahama, the agreement required Ghana to provide the United States with its pathogen profile and medical records. It also required the country to commit counterpart funding and stipulated that medical products brought into Ghana under the programme would not be subject to inspection by the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA).

He said the Ministry of Health reviewed the compact and presented its concerns to Cabinet, which rejected the proposal.

“It was humiliating,” President Mahama said, adding that Cabinet rejected the compact in record time.

He said the government subsequently instructed the Health Minister to inform the US Ambassador that Ghana would manage its health needs independently.

The proposed deal was reported to be worth about US$109 million in health assistance over five years. Ghana had earlier rejected the agreement amid concerns over provisions requiring the sharing of sensitive health data.
