What is really happening to Accra Hearts of Oak and Kumasi Asante Kotoko SC?

For years now, Ghana’s two biggest football clubs have struggled to dominate the Ghana Premier League. The consistency and dominance that once defined both clubs seem to be fading season after season.

In other African leagues, the traditional giants continue to set the standard. In Egypt, it is difficult to go two seasons without either Al Ahly or Zamalek winning the league title. In South Africa, clubs like Mamelodi Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs, and Orlando Pirates consistently remain competitive and influential.

But in Ghana, Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko are no longer dominating domestically as expected. Their struggles have also extended to continental competitions, where performances in recent years have been disappointing.

So, what exactly is the problem?

Why are Ghana’s two biggest clubs struggling to reclaim their dominance in the domestic league and on the African stage?
