Joel 1:13-15;2:1-2; Ps 9:-3,6,16,8-9 and Lk 11:15-26.

Today, in addressing a false accusation levelled against him by some of the crowd (the Pharisees’ people), that it is *“By the power of Beelzebul, the prince of demons, he drives out demons”*, Jesus compares himself to a bandit who has the strength or power to plunder Satan’s fortress. Jesus really has the power and strength over Satan. Jesus conquered Satan on the Cross, a curse of the law Christ Jesus took upon himself when he hung on the Cross. He did this so that we would not have to bear our own punishment that our sins caused us. Christ died on the Cross on our behalf, to free and save us from the bo***ge of sin, caused by Satan. By this kind gesture of Christ for us, it means that, Satan, who had controlled the kingdom of this world for thousands of years, is now being controlled and overpowered by Jesus and the Kingdom of Heaven. We ought to always be grateful to the Lord for the victory he won for you and me on the Cross.

There is no doubt in this world we still continue to be in constant battle with Satan, our archenemy. He has not given up. Satan uses all sorts of means and ways as channels to fight us. When we give in, then we are possessed and being manipulated by him and his principalities. Most of the things we have in the world, our own designs, are good but Satan also uses them to lure us and sometimes, before we realize, they are demon/evil spirit possessions on/in us.

Jesus shows us that the devil is relentless in his struggle against us, despite our rejecting him with the help of God’s grace. He still lays his traps, still tries to overpower us. In the light of this, Saint Peter advises us to be sober and vigilant, because *“your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith”* (1Pet 5:8-9). Jesus also forewarns us about the danger of being once more defeated by Satan, which would leave us worse off than we were before. We should be cautious about the fact that “the corruption of the best is the worst of all”. In his inspired text, Saint Peter warns against corrupt Christians, and compares them in a graphic and frightening way to the dog turning back to his own vomit and the sow being washed and then wallowing in the mire (Cf. 2Pet 2:22). Stay blessed.

Mal 3:13-20b; Ps 1:1-4,6 and Lk 11:5-13.

Generally, today’s first reading from the prophet Malachi contracts those who serve God with those who do not. The Gospel for the day shows how eager the Lord is to grant the requests of those who ask, seek and knock.

Going forward, today’s Gospel sorts of addresses a current phenomenon among many people in most parts of the world: the tendency to make it quick or fast, to achieve our aims, needs and wants overnight without any or much toil, endurance and persistence. There are a lot of people in our contemporary times who think that everything should be at their beck and call. They think that whatever they want at anytime, they must have that. Other people think that they should not suffer at all in this life and their carnal desires and passions should not meet any frustrations and failures. Therefore, when their aspirations are not met, they carry their hands on their heads in desperation, as if the whole world is against them.

We are challenged and at the same time encouraged by today’s scriptures that the Lord will continue to give the Holy Spirit to those who ask. Also, those who persist and are bold in prayer, asking for important gifts and things from the Lord will not go unanswered. Indeed, anyone who sincerely asks from the Lord, will receive, anyone who seeks will find, and anyone who knocks at the Lord’s door, it will be opened to him/her to enter in. The Lord God is our perfect heavenly Father and he will not treat us badly, except we ask for such a treatment through our own efforts or through other ways to make it fast and quick in life without toil, persistence and endurance. For instance, some of us think we can make it fast and quick in life through magic, occultism and idol worship (which were very common in Paul’s day, Acts 8:9-11; 13:6-7). It is worth noting that magicians and those involved in occultism and idol worship, use both optical illusions and Satan’s powers to perform miracles, and people are drawn into these people’s mysterious rites without recognizing the dangerous sources of them. Please, genuinely and sincerely ask and seek from God, and always knock at his door and you will not regret it. It might not be what you are asking for, but the Lord will surely give you a substitute. May the Lord help each of us to persevere in prayer, even if it seems to bear little fruits. May Our Lady of the Holy Rosary intercede for us. May the Saints we celebrate today intercede for us. Stay blessed and happy feast to all who bear the names of today’s saints.

Jon 4:1-11; Ps 85:3-6,9-10 and Lk 11:1-4

*“… forgive us our sins for we ourselves forgive everyone in debt to us”* (Lk 11:4). In teaching his disciples how to pray, Jesus gives them a typical Jewish prayer called the ‘Model Prayer’ or the Lord’s Prayer/the Our Father. This prayer contains an invocation, petitions or requests and a doxology. One of the requests or petitions very well describes God our Father as a *“MERCIFUL LIKE THE FATHER”* (Lk 6:36). We are invited to follow the merciful example of the Father who is compassionate, and who asks us to forgive, and we will be forgiven. Note, the amount in measure of forgiveness we give, will in turn be given to us, *“pressed down, shaken together, and overflowing, will be poured into your lap; because the standard you use will be the standard used for you’”* (Lk 6:36-38). This is frightening.

Indeed, forgiveness is an important aspect of Christianity. God created us out of love and he did not intend anyone going astray from his sight. However, due to disobedience and sin, humanity cut, and continue to cut himself off from the love and protective care of God the Father. Therefore, we all stand in need of his merciful love. God is not happy when we go astray because of our sinful deeds. He never abandons sinful humanity but always shows him love and mercy. This was his reason for electing his chosen race, the Israelites, so that through them he could save the whole of humanity. Down through the history of Israel, a lot of things tried to impair God’s salvific plan for sinful humanity. At his own appointed time, God sent his only Begotten Son to save us. He gave up his life on the cross as ransom for us. He taught his disciples and all of us to do what he came to do; ‘Forgiveness and Reconciliation’. God’s love is universal.

Truly, a believer who is not able or cannot forgive someone who wrongs him/her or who cannot reconcile with a person who offends him/her, is a counter witness, it is a contradiction in terms. God always forgives us whatever sins we commit against him, including those sins, humanly speaking, are unforgivable, when we humbly come to him in repentance. Why can we not forgive those who sin, in minor ways against us? Yet every day or almost every day we pray the Lord’s prayer.

Sometimes some of us think we are doing well by choosing to forgive some people but refusing to forgive others. We even discriminate when it comes to forgiveness, or when it comes to extending God’s mercy, forgiveness and love to people who need them. We will be worse than Jonah of old if we are not able to forgive. In the first reading for today, Jonah becomes angry when God forgives his enemies, the Ninevites. May we in turn, learn to do same to those who need that from us. May we not place any barriers or stumbling blocks before others who need our mercy, love and forgiveness. May God give us the wisdom and understanding to always distinguish essentials from non-essentials in our efforts to forgive others. Pray today for the grace to forgive others and know that forgiveness is more a powerful drug than any drug to heal our emotional wounds caused by grudges, offenses and misdeeds. Also know that, you will suffer more the emotional pain and anguish than the one who offends you and you are not able to forgive him or her. Stay blessed.

I honestly believe it is time for our beloved Nation to re-examine the maximum age for enlistment into our military services.

There are people in their 30s who are physically fit and sound enough to serve their Nation. We must not deny them this opportunity simply because of their age.

There is precedence across the world. I believe an upper limit of 35 years would serve our young people better. Let's nurture their dreams and not kill it.
