Ancient Nonsense Is Still Nonsense

Some theists would have you believe that the fact that their religion is thousands of years old somehow makes it more credible than many other things (including newer religions and scientific discoveries that contradict their religious beliefs).

The opposite is actually true, however. We’re talking about religions invented by people who didn’t even know where the sun went at night, who believed in magic and all sorts of supernatural beings, and who thought that stars were pinholes in the fabric of the night sky.

You don’t have credibility — you’re just showing how credulous you are!

As someone who does not believe in life after death and believes that we live only once, don't you think it sounds absolutely depressing?

Not really, no.

The knowledge that my life is finite is one of the things that gives my life meaning. Everything I do (or don’t do) is important to me, since I only have the one chance at this life.

What would be absolutely depressing to me would be the thought of living forever and ever and ever, with nothing I do having any meaning whatsoever because life will just go on and on and on and on and on regardless.

As an analogy, I enjoy collecting coins. I don’t have a lot of disposable income that I can spend on coins, so I have to spend a lot of time and effort looking for the best deals on the coins I want to add to my collection, balancing such things as cost and eye appeal in order to obtain coins that I am satisfied with. And, as a result, each and every coin I own is dear to me and I enjoy looking at them and remembering how I got them.

However, let’s say I were to win some obscene amount of money in the lottery, $500 million or something like that. At that point, with all that money and no worries about having to save for the future, I could just go out and buy the world’s best coin collection in one fell swoop. And that collection would mean precisely nothing to me, I am quite sure.

Is Religion a Business? The Economics, Psychology, and Exploitation of Modern Faith

The Anglican Church has a £17 billion portfolio and wants to defraud those it is in debt to by using a completely undemocratic Synod to pass laws protecting itself.

Rumor has it that the Catholic Church swallows ~30% of the Polish GDP. In the little village where my daughter’s in-laws live, if the priest needs anything, he goes from house to house with a bag and everyone has to put money in. They check the envelopes every week to see that people have donated.

In crime dramas someone always says, “Follow the money and see whom it benefits.” This is a good policy. Author Robert Heinlein summed it up beautifully: .....

Why do you really love God and what do you really benefit from it?

Nobody ‘loves’ God. They are just in love with an idea of God they have been fed by people who themselves claim to ‘know’ this God (usually men in a pulpit or on a platform, who make a living from telling you this).

The idea of God they love is a very sanitised and sugar-coated version. So, if it’s the Christian God we are talking about:

"The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully.” (Professor Steve Dawkins)

When asked in a US tv interview what he would say to God, Stephen Fry said:

“It's painfully apparent. He's utterly monstrous and deserves no respect whatsoever.”

Christopher Hitchens said that worship of “God amounts to a ‘celestial dictatorship’ and a totalitarian monster that demands perpetual servility”

These are not random, anti-theistic musings from rationalists, but based entirely upon the character of the God revealed in the Bible, particularly in the Old Testament.

In the Old Testament:

Instant and widespread death: People die immediately for minor or accidental disrespect toward holy things. In conquests, God tells his commanders such as Joshua, Moses & Saul to kill even non-combatants, such as women, children and animals
Harsh legal retribution and punishments : God sends plagues, floods, and fire to destroy large groups of people, including women & children. Punishments such as stonings for relatively minor misdemeanours are out of all proportion to natural justice

According to Numbers chapter 15, this man was stoned to death for doing this
Sustained anger: Texts often describe God as burning with fury against sin and rebellion.
Strict devotion: God demands exclusive worship and reacts with extreme jealously and rage to his people worshipping idols or other gods.
Enjoined slavery: God tell his people they buy slaves from the nations around them, own them as property, and use harsh punishments to keep them in line
Christian ‘apologists’ naturally will want to steer you away from this portrayal of God, and so will tell us that we need to look at the God of the New Testament. Sure, he is mostly portrayed in a very different way here - the loving, forgiving, merciful 'Father' who gave up his Son that we could enjoy a new 'relationship’ with him, and look forward to eternity in his presence.

Yet, when we analyse it, the problems start right there.

This is a Father that would have his own Son killed, just to satisfy his own anger and fury at sin. Not a great role-model of fatherhood is it? Try explaining that to a five-year-old.

And this is the Father who created human beings as his children to worship him. I often ask a parent, what would your child have to do, for you to pick up a flame-thrower, and incinerate them to death? Watching as your child screamed and writhed in the flames until they died?

Yet that is what this 'Father' will do to us, if we don’t do as he asks of us. (And continue burning us for eternity, according to the dominant versions of Christianity).

Not very appealing is it? Certainly not the kind of parenting recommended by self-help books on the subject.

Yet there are hundreds of millions of people who claim to 'love' this God. It makes you worried about the future of mankind, doesn’t it?

How bad would your child need to be for you to incinerate them?

Why did God create hell if he claims to love all of his creations so much?

Because his flood that drowned every living thing wasn’t enough to satiate his infatuation with misery, torture and death?

God creating humans and inventing hell, is like breeding puppies, keeping them in a back yard with no training or human contact and then throwing them on a fire for being naughty.

What are the top ten reasons to be an atheist?

The Top Ten Reasons to Be an Atheist (in no particular order) are:

Drum roll, please…

1. It’s obvious that all world religions are the product of extremely ignorant (not stupid) near barbarians who didn’t understand much about the world around them and made up stories to explain things the best they could. We no longer believe that the universe is made of four elements, that our health is governed by the balance of our four humors, that the Earth is the center of the universe with everything revolving around it, that mental illness is caused by demonic possession, etc. Why, then, should we still cling to ancient ideas about gods?

2. It’s obvious that most people who say they believe in God believe in the God that is worshiped by the culture in which they grew up. And everybody is convinced that their religion is the only “right” one. They can’t all be right, but they can certainly all be wrong.

3. It’s obvious that the universe is just too vast and full of stuff not in any way related to humans to seriously believe that it was all made just for us and that we are the pinnacle of all creation.

4. It’s obvious that the religious beliefs of today are substantively the same as every other discarded superstitious belief of the past. If it’s silly to believe in Thor and Osiris, it’s just as silly to believe in Allah or Jehovah.

5. It’s obvious that every single bit of proposed “evidence” for the existence of God has either been totally debunked or can be explained through other means. And it is obvious that any justification for believing in God is part of an ever-shrinking “god of the gaps” argument.

6. It’s obvious that the various “Holy Scriptures” that supposedly provide the only source for knowledge about God are riddled with internal inconsistencies and blatantly wrong information about the world and world history.

7. It’s obvious that every depiction of God that is actually worshiped by anybody is riddled with logical inconsistencies. How can God be all-powerful, all-knowing and all-loving if he permits massive suffering throughout the entire universe (and not just suffering caused by man’s free will)? Why would an all-loving God set up a system whereby the vast, vast majority of his children would never get a chance to hear the “truth” and be saved, and thus be condemned to an eternity of torture? How can God simultaneously be immaterial and timeless (“pure mind”) and still interact with the material world?

8. It’s obvious that things like “God moves in mysterious ways” and “God always answers prayers, but sometimes the answer is no” are just lame excuses to explain why God rarely (if ever) keeps his supposed promise to actually GIVE the faithful what they ask for in faith (not just “answer their prayers”).

9. It’s obvious that “God” is just Santa Claus for adults. Believing in Him may give you comfort in times of trouble and give you something to look forward to, but that doesn’t mean He is real.

10. And, to top it off, after thousands and thousands of years, no believer has ever offered a shred of compelling evidence or any sound logical argument to support a belief in such a being. Although, to be absolutely honest, the entire notion of “God” is so insanely ridiculous and childish and obviously the product of ignorant superstitions in the first place that it’s hard to even imagine what sort of “evidence” or “argument” would actually be sufficient to support a belief in such a being. And if you think that makes me sound “closed-minded,” then I’m afraid you’ll just have to blame the people who came up with such a ridiculous notion in the first place.

What are the 5 main cases of corruption in the Bible?

These are the five main cases of corruption that I have found during my extensive readings and studies of the bible.

I believe “hell” is by far the greatest corruption of the bible, and it’s an intentional corruption. The biblical god Yahweh and his prophets never mentioned “hell” or any possibility of suffering after death. This can be confirmed by searching any of the more accurate bible translations for the word “hell,” which cannot be found in a properly translated Old Testament. Why was the pagan “hell” clumsily stitched into the New Testament? Because the charlatans who wrote the NT replaced prophets with profits. “Hell” is the Christian religion’s biggest moneymaker.

Another major corruption of the bible is the introduction of Satan as a scapegoat for the abominable sins of the evil biblical god Yahweh. A character named Satan is missing from the first 3000 years of biblical chronologies from Adam and Eve to the census of King David. And when Satan finally appears, he is used intentionally in Chronicles as a scapegoat to keep Yahweh from unjustly murdering 70,000 innocent people over a census he had commanded David to take, in the books of Samuel. (2 Samuel 24:1 vs. 1 Chronicles 21:1)

Thus according to the authors of Chronicles and Samuel, god and the devil are the same being!

A third major corruption of the bible is the book of Daniel, a second-century BCE forgery that introduced the idea of a war in heaven between “good” angels and “fallen” angels. In this forgery we see how Babylonian myths influenced the evolution of Judaism, and therefore influenced early christian thinking (I use the term lightly and facetiously).

A fourth major corruption of the bible is the introduction of irreconcilable “virgin birth” narratives in the gospels of Matthew and Luke.

A fifth major corruption of the bible is the metamorphosis of Jesus into a mass-murderer in the lunatic book of Revelation, which says Jesus will slaughter billions of human beings and trillions of animals (a third of all life on land and sea).

The bible has many other corruptions but these are five that leapt immediately to mind when I read the question.

How do different religious groups react when their holy texts are shown to contain inaccuracies or myths?

(All religions rely on 'apologists’ to defend their holy texts.)

They react in almost identical ways: deny and deflect.

Christianity (in common with other religions) has a caste of specialists which they call ‘apologists’, whose job it is to make the problems in the Bible go away. They use these two familiar strategies:

Deny: Christians of almost every persuasion habitually fall back on the well-worn mantra “there are no errors or contradictions in the Bible". They hear this mantra repeated from the pulpit, and read it in Christian propaganda leaflets, and before long, they start to believe it themselves.

The problem is they are denying what is (for everyone else) plain to see. The problems in the Bible - the errors, the contradictions, the terrible morality, and the obvious myths - are all in plain sight. Nonetheless, the mantra provides a stabilizing and comforting anchor point, which they can fall back upon when the arguments are not going their way. If all else fails, just finish by repeating the mantra, “there are no contradictions in the Bible”

Deflect: apologists use a number of tactics to try to steer people away from the more obvious problem passages: for example, pointing out that by focusing on them, they will miss the key message of salvation! Or point out that the Bible is not a 'science book', and we should not expect ancient peoples to be able to grasp modern scientific concepts; to emphasize the 'mystery' of faith, and that something may appear to our limited human minds as a problem, will all become clear in eternity!

(Anyone questioning or challenging the Bible is frequently seen as an agent of the Devil himself)

Some apologists will use a more polemical, or 'attacking' stance, questioning the motives of the person challenging their holy text - for example, claiming that they are seeking excuses not to believe, nurturing sin, or are harboring rebellion against God. I frequently get accusations of being a 'tool of the devil to deceive the saints', that I 'hate God', I deliberately 'twist scripture' - even that I 'worship Satan' and that my 'brain is infested with demons'.

Since the arrival of the internet, people have had access to the kind of information that previously was hidden from them, but now the genie is out of the bottle.

(Anyone has access to information about the errors and contradictions in the Bible)

The growth of Christian 'apologetics' to the massive industry it is now - thousands of books, videos and websites all devoted to trying to explain away all the problems in the Bible - is testimony to that, and the increasing desperation of Christians to defend their holy book.

Other religions are feeling it too, with the rise in the number of apologists for the Jewish, Hindu and Muslim faiths, all of them now relying on similar tactics to those that Christians use.
