K24news: Wontumi risks arrest if he fails to report to Accra on October 6 – Ayine

Ghana’s Attorney General, Dr Dominic Ayine, has disclosed that Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known popularly as Chairman Wontumi, must report himself or risk arrest on October 6, 2025.

According to him, his office has completed processes to formally charge Chairman Wontumi, Akonta Mining, and five others following investigations that revealed encroachment on forest reserves without the necessary permits.

The Attorney General made this known when he addressed CSOs who were meeting the president on Galamsey on Friday October 3, 2025.

“I am happy to announce that in 2022, the police conducted a very diligent investigation in terms of Akonta Mining, but the dockets were hidden until we came to power.

It was when I came in and began the investigation with the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources and the Forestry Commission, we were finding it difficult to get information on the case.

It was then that the police themselves owned up and presented that docket to my office two months ago,” he revealed.

Dr. Ayine explained that while Chairman Wontumi’s lawyers requested a Tuesday appearance, he had directed that the accused appear on Monday instead.

“As we speak, the charges against Chairman Wontumi and Akonta Mining and five others have been signed.

Currently, we are waiting for his rights to be read to him, and he has the right to remain silent before he is brought from Kumasi.

“His lawyers asked that he be brought on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, but I insisted that he be here on Monday, October 6, 2025.

If he does not come on Monday, I am going to order his arrest so that he is brought to Accra and then we can start the prosecution,” Dr. Ayine stated.

K24news: Transformation can’t happen overnight – Boakye Agyarko on ‘Moko aya ni moko aba’ cycle

Boakye Agyarko has shared insights into the challenges of governance and electoral psychology in Ghana.

Speaking in an interview with Paul Adom-Otchere on Good Evening Ghana,’ Agyarko highlighted the role of subliminal messaging and the unrealistic expectations governments often place on themselves.

“What I’m saying is that through subliminal messaging and advertisement, we have trapped ourselves over this period into this Moko aya ni moko aba cycle,” he said. “Right?”

Agyarko argued that governments often burden themselves with ambitious transformational agendas within short timeframes, which sets the stage for public impatience.

“The government also at the beginning, put upon itself a heavy transformational agenda to implement within a very short time.

“That kind of transformational agendas don’t happen on short leashes and short cycles,” he explained.

He cited examples from global development models to stress his point. “People talk about Singapore.

“People talk about Mahathir Mohammed in Malaysia. People even talk about Fernando Henrique Cardoso in Brazil. These were not short leash four, eight year cycles that lead to transformation,” he said firmly.

K24news: Galamsey Fight: National Security Council says state of emergency isn’t needed now – Mahama

President of Ghana John Dramani Mahama has disclosed that the National Security Council believes the country can win the fight against galamsey without declaring a state of emergency.

There have been calls on the president to declare a state of emergency, especially in areas where illegal mining takes place.

However, the president has insisted that there is no need for a State of Emergency per the counsel of the National Security Council.

He indicates that he is willing to declare a state of emergency anytime the need be to help in the fight against the menace.

“Yes, I have the power to do it, but the President acts not only on the authority but on the advice of the National Security Council. As of now, the National Security Council believes that we can win the fight against galamsey without a state of emergency.

I want to assure you that the day they advise me otherwise, that boss, now we need a state of emergency, I will not hesitate in declaring a state of emergency. We do still think that we have the powers to be able to win this fight and as we deploy more troops and apply more resources to the fight, I am sure that gradually we will begin to see that we are winning the fight,” he stated.

K24news: MASLOC Urges Defaulters to Repay Loans, Commissions New Northern Regional Office

The Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) has called on defaulters to repay their loans, emphasizing that taxpayers' money is meant to be disbursed evenly for the benefit of all. The Northern Regional Manager for MASLOC, Hajia Alimatu Abdul-Nasser, made this appeal during the commissioning of the newly established Regional office for MASLOC at the Regional Coordinating Council.

Hajia Abdul-Nasser expressed concern over the low rate of loan repayment among clients, lamenting that the large number of defaulters is hindering the effective operation of the institution and disrupting ongoing support for other beneficiaries. She warned that defaulters would face legal action if they failed to come forward and settle their debts.

He emphasized that customer service is a top priority for MASLOC and urged all staff to utilize the new office effectively and maintain a high level of professionalism.

Addressing the issue of loan default and improving service delivery, Mr. Kessie indicated that MASLOC was aim to promote economic growth and development in the region. The Northern Sector Manager assured the general public of the institution's commitment to its mandate, calling on staff to adhere to professional standards and make the most of the new office.

K24news: Galamsey didn’t start under Mahama, but It’s reducing – Dormaahene

Dormaahene Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyeman Badu II has noted that galamsey has declined in recent years but remains a serious concern that must be addressed with urgency.

Speaking to journalists in Accra on Thursday, October 2, after being sworn in alongside 20 others as a Justice of the Court of Appeal, the Dormaahene reflected on the state of the menace that has long threatened Ghana’s environment and communities.

“I have been on this stool for almost 26 and a half years. Galamsey, the illegal mining, did not start yesterday; it’s been with us for some time.

“If you ask me about my assessment I will say now it is going down,” he said.

He cautioned, however, that the fight is far from over.

“I wouldn’t stand here and say galamsey is gone; it is still with us but I believe that if you look at the seriousness… we should ensure that we nip this situation in the bud,” he added.

The Dormaahene stressed the importance of preserving natural resources for future generations.

“This is the only thing our ancestors left for us so we don’t have to destroy our water bodies, cocoa farms and ensure that we do farming in the right way so we can all be happy,” he urged.

According to him, while galamsey did not begin under the current administration, interventions over the years, particularly from President John Dramani Mahama’s era, have helped reduce its prevalence.

Still, he maintained that consistent vigilance and stricter enforcement are required to finally rid the nation of the practice.
