Happy World Orca Day & Shark Awareness Day! 🐋🦈

🐬Orcas (also known as killer whales) are the largest members of the dolphin family and can grow up to 8m long!
🌊They can be found in every single ocean. Sightings in the Strait of Gibraltar are most frequent between July and September- this is when the bluefin tuna, a primary food source for orcas, migrate through the Strait.
🐟Orcas are apex predators, meaning they are extremely important for controlling populations of other marine animals and maintaining ecosystem balance under the sea.
🐳They live in big groups called pods, where they forage cooperatively.
👵The grandmother is an important and well-looked after member of the pod, because she uses her experience to teach the others how to hunt and navigate the seas. Studies have shown the presence of a grandmother in the pod increases the survival rate of her grandchildren significantly.

Sharks in the seas around southern Spain and Gibraltar include the blue shark (most common), hammerhead shark, basking shark, porbeagle shark, angel shark, thresher shark and, of course, the great white (although sightings of which are rare).🦈
