Have you ever seen a snow leopard? ❄️🐆 These beautiful big cats live in the cold, alpine regions of northern Asia, where they roam solitarily through ranges of up to 220 km²! 🐾🗻

Snow leopards are apex predators, meaning they play an important role in protecting vegetation from overgrazing, by controlling populations of mountain sheep and goats. They are also useful to scientists as accurate proxies for measuring climate change.

Unfortunately, they are listed as "Vulnerable" by the IUCN, meaning they are at risk of endangerment, and this is mainly due to poaching (of the leopards themselves or their prey) and habitat loss due to global warming.

Supporting the conservation of a species so far away is admittedly difficult where we are, but ways to help with this issue indirectly could include fundraising or sponsoring a snow leopard through charities such as World Wildlife Fund () and The Snow Leopard Trust ().
snowleopardnetwork.org is a worldwide organisation where you can find more information, including exchange and insight from individuals around the world with the aim of snow leopard conservation.

Finally, more general information about *local* wildlife conservation initiatives can be provided by Gibraltar Ornithological & Natural History Society - GONHS () and the Alameda Wildlife Conservation Park (). 🐾

Today OTWO are at the “Caminando la Frontera” congress in La Línea! 🚶 🎤 This event brings together leaders from all walks of life - politics, urban planning and environmental affairs - with the shared vision to make our cities in Spain and Gibraltar more pedestrian-friendly. 🚦🚧

In particular, we look forward to gaining some insight from the Mayor of Pontevedra, who ambitiously kickstarted Pontevedra’s transition into a “car-free” city with pedestrian priority. These changes have statistically improved air quality, reduced traffic accidents and helped local commerce thrive. 💚

Could we achieve the same thing in Gibraltar and La Línea?🤔

Welcome to the vibrant and hilly city of Lisbon- one of the oldest capitals in the world with a population of over half a million people! 🇵🇹🕍📍
Despite having a lot more land than Gibraltar, you may be surprised to discover that the population densities of both places are actually very similar. This means we are both tackling a difficult trade-off between demand for increased urbanisation, and space for nature. 🏙🌳🐾
So, what to do? OTWO visited some organisations who were successfully reforesting small pockets of the city (at no one's expense) for inspiration on how to implement a similar environmental strategy in Gibraltar. This was a four-day trip alongside the company of The Gibraltar Horticultural Society () , Whole Wild World (.rewild) and GBC ().

Many thanks to the kind and proactive organisations responsible for these projects and for being our guides:
Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa () 🎓🧑‍🔬
HortaFCUL () 🌿🌳
Urbem (.forests) 🌱👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

Did you know Gibraltar is part of one of the most important avian migratory bottlenecks in the world? This means a lot of birds pass through here during the change of seasons, to summer in Europe or to winter in Africa! 🦅🐦🐦‍⬛🪿🕊

The Mediterranean olive tree is an important food source for many of these birds. It is one of the most common trees in Gibraltar, making up most the greenery you can see on the Upper Rock. 🌳🌿🗻

Migratory birds are important to conserve because they play vital roles in ecosystem health, from dispersing seeds to controlling insect populations that damage crops. Of course, wildlife-friendly infrastructure ensured at a government level such as protecting the nature reserves and vegetation by law is fundamental in disrupting this migration route. However, some things we can do to protect our fauna include:

- Respecting the wildlife when visiting the nature reserve (both the plants and animals)
- Leaving nests and bird boxes alone
- Not littering or unnecessarily overusing vehicles
- Contacting Wildlife Authorities when required: For injured birds, it is important to contact the appropriate authorities, such as the Avian Control Unit on 20066588, rather than taking matters into your own hands.
The Alameda Wildlife Conservation Park () also take in grounded or injured swifts to rear by hand.

For more information, check out Gibraltar Nature Reserve (.gi) , Gibraltar Ornithological & Natural History Society - GONHS () and The Gibraltar Natural History Museum ().
