IGP TOURAY PROMOTES TRAFFIC OFFICER FOR COURAGEOUS ACT OF DUTY UNDER DANGEROUS CIRCUMSTANCES

Date: June 10, 2026

The Inspector General of Police, Seedy Mukhtar Touray, on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, promoted Sergeant Alhagie Badjie of the Police Traffic Unit to the rank of Inspector in recognition of his exceptional courage, professionalism, and remarkable restraint during a dangerous encounter with the driver of a Mercedes-Benz vehicle.

The incident occurred while the officer was lawfully carrying out traffic enforcement duties after the driver reportedly failed to produce a valid insurance certificate for the vehicle upon request.

During the engagement, the driver allegedly wound up the vehicle’s window, trapping Inspector Badjie’s hand, before recklessly driving off in an apparent attempt to evade arrest.

Faced with an immediate threat to his safety and determined to avoid being dragged along the roadway, the officer was compelled to climb onto the bonnet of the moving vehicle while repeatedly instructing the driver to stop.

Despite several warnings from the officer, the suspect continued driving from Banjul to Manjai, demonstrating a blatant disregard for public safety. The driver eventually abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene but was subsequently arrested by the Police. The matter is currently before the courts.

The promotion reflects the Inspector General’s recognition of Inspector Badjie’s courage, discipline, and commitment to duty in the face of significant danger. His actions exemplify the professionalism and resilience expected of members of the Gambia Police Force.

The Gambia Police Force commends Inspector Badjie for his bravery, composure, and steadfast dedication to public service under challenging and life-threatening circumstances.

Congratulations to Inspector Badjie and the Police Traffic Unit on this well-deserved recognition.

The Gambia Government Announces Temporal Suspension of ID Cards & Driver License
Issuance

Banjul, The Gambia— The Gambia Government through the Ministry of Interior, brings to the
attention of the public that the ā€˜Go-Live Date’ for the issuance of new National Identification
Cards, Driver’s Licenses and related documents under the new Public Private Partnership (PPP)
Agreement with Margins ID Group, is rescheduled for Monday, 29th June, 2026.

Effective immediately, and in line with the signed Build, Co-operate and Transfer Agreement,
The Gambia Immigration Department (GID) and The Gambia Police Force (GPF) will temporarily suspend the issuance of ID cards and driver’s licenses respectively. This cooling-off period is to give time to the technical team to review and backup the current database that will be used for verification and synchronization.

Therefore, applicants who already made payments via the GovPay portal will be allowed to
proceed with the enrolment procedures, and all those already enrolled and awaiting their ID Cards, will be issued their new cards after the Go-Live date.

Significantly, some 670,000 free replacements will be made for all those with valid ID cards at
first-come-first-serve basis. The free replacement will take place in the first 6 months of the Go- Live date.
The validity period for the new ID cards will be ten (10) years instead of the previous five years.

The Gambia Government regrets any potential inconveniences this may cause, and appreciates
the public’s patience while these important measures are completed.

Signed ,
Ebrima G. Sankareh

Update on GBA & West Coast Region Power Supply Situation — 8th June 2026

NAWEC wishes to inform the public and its valued customers of recent improvements in the GBA & West Coast electricity supply situation following ongoing recovery efforts.

Since Saturday, 6th June 2026, local generation capacity has improved significantly following the successful restoration of Generator 5 (G5) to the national grid. G5 had been offline since 18th May 2026 due to a minor fault following the completion of a major overhaul. Now fully operational and contributing 10 megawatts (MW), G5 complements existing supply from the Jambur Solar PV Plant and Brikama power stations, providing a meaningful boost to overall power availability.

The duration of load shedding has significantly decreased. While some areas previously experienced outages of up to 20 hours, this has now been reduced to approximately 10 hours where outages still occur.
NAWEC continues to implement load management measures where necessary, while prioritising essential services such as health facilities, water production systems, and other national critical infrastructure. Major efforts are underway to bring additional engines back into operation to further increase capacity and meet demand more reliably.

NAWEC acknowledges the inconvenience caused during this period and appreciates the patience and understanding of the public.

By Ebrima Migrants Situation

The Senegalese authorities dismantled an alleged migrant-smuggling network operating from the town of Kafountine in southern Senegal.

The regional branch of the National Division against Trafficking in Migrants and Related Practices (DNLT) in Ziguinchor arrested four suspected organizers.

On 21 May 2026, the suspects were referred to Senegal's Financial Judicial Pool for prosecution.

They face accusations including criminal association, attempted migrant smuggling by sea, complicity, endangering lives, and organized fraud.

Investigators say the network charged migrants between 400,000 and 800,000 CFA francs depending on nationality.

Candidates reportedly received numbered tickets as proof of payment and registration.

Migrants were allegedly housed in a transit apartment under strict controls, including restrictions on movement, noise, and phone use.

Police intervention reportedly prevented the departure of around 30 migrants who were preparing to board a boat, while investigators identified nearly 100 people linked to the network.

Authorities seized:

One large canoe and outboard engine.

One motorcycle allegedly used for transport and logistics.

1,000,000 CFA francs in cash.

Investigations are continuing to identify other suspected members of the network.

The case highlights the continued use of the Atlantic migration route from the coasts of Senegal and The Gambia toward the Canary Islands, a route that remains one of the deadliest irregular migration corridors in the world. Authorities in both Senegal and The Gambia have increased efforts in recent months to disrupt smuggling networks and prevent departures.

PRESS RELEASE

THE PEOPLE DEMAND WATER, ELECTRICITY, AND DIGNITY: MASS PROTEST SCHEDULED FOR 19TH JUNE

Gambians Against Looted Assets, (GALA) have formally submitted a notification to the Gambia Police Force informing them of a peaceful public protest scheduled for 19th June 2026 at the NAWEC Headquarters.

This action is a direct response to the unbearable electricity outages and water shortages that continue to plague ordinary Gambians across the country. While citizens endure darkness, dry taps, damaged businesses, interrupted education, and declining living conditions, those entrusted with solving these problems continue to offer excuses instead of solutions.

Electricity and water are not privileges; they are fundamental necessities. The continued failure to provide these essential services undermines the dignity, welfare, and economic survival of the Gambian people.

We therefore call upon workers, students, women, youth, market vendors, transport operators, and all progressive forces to stand united in demanding accountability and immediate action. The people can no longer remain silent while suffering becomes normalized.

Our protest shall be peaceful, disciplined, and lawful, but our message shall be firm and unequivocal: Enough is Enough.

The struggle for decent living conditions is a legitimate struggle. The demand for water and electricity is a just demand. It is the collective voice of a people who deserve reliable public services and responsive leadership.

On 19th June, let our voices be heard. Let those entrusted with public responsibility understand that citizens will continue to organize, mobilize, and advocate until meaningful solutions are delivered.

Power to the People.
Water for the People.
Electricity for the People.
Long Shall the People Live!

Signed,
Central Committee,GALA
