Xabi Alonso: “Liverpool Taught Me to Think About Football, Not Just Play It”

When Xabi Alonso returns to Anfield, it won’t just be as Real Madrid’s coach.
It will be as someone shaped by the place he’s about to face.

“It influenced me a lot because it wasn't an insubstantial step,” he told Real Madrid’s official media.
“I spent five years with Rafa Benítez and I learnt a lot about football at the highest level.
It's not just about playing the games but also thinking about them and preparing for them.
Having that curiosity helped me to be here at this moment.”

That word — curiosity — defines him more than any formation could.
He still remembers the sessions at Melwood, the detail, the discipline, the obsession with timing and space.
Those lessons didn’t just make him a midfielder.
They made him a thinker.

Now he returns to Anfield leading Real Madrid, a team built in his image:

“If you like football, you like to play for a club like this,” he said.
“Liverpool and Real Madrid are huge in Europe. Those were very good years that helped me a lot as a player,
but I’m sure they also helped me as a coach.”
