A Valuable Lesson From the Arab World: Offering Prayers for Our Leaders

By Abubacarr Mishari Njie, CEO, AMMP Gambia

During my travels across the Arab world, I had the opportunity to experience various cultural and spiritual practices that left a lasting impression on me. However, there is one practice that stands out above all others one that I believe could have a transformative impact on The Gambia if we embrace it.

In almost every Arab country I visited, I noticed a powerful and common tradition: people consistently pray for the success, health, and guidance of their leaders, particularly during Juma (Friday) prayers. On the surface, this may seem like a routine act, but upon reflecting on its deeper meaning, I came to realize how significant it truly is.

In these societies, praying for the well being of the leader is not merely a ceremonial act; it is a deeply ingrained practice. It reflects a collective belief that the leader’s success is directly connected to the country’s prosperity. When a leader is wise, strong, and righteous, the nation flourishes, and the people thrive.
This practice serves as a reminder that leadership is not an individual burden; it is a shared responsibility between the leader and the people. It’s about understanding that the strength of the leader is the strength of the nation, and that the welfare of the people is tied to the direction in which the leader guides the country.

As I observed this practice, I began to think about our own nation, The Gambia. We are a country with many diverse viewpoints, political opinions, and differences. But despite all these variations, one undeniable truth remains: the success of our country depends on the collective efforts of all of us. The future of The Gambia is not determined by one individual, but by all of us working together to build a better tomorrow.

We often hear the saying, Leadership is everything, and indeed, this is true. A nation’s future is shaped by the quality, vision, and decisions of its leaders. However, leadership is not just about the individual at the helm it’s also about the people who support them, advise them, and pray for their success. I firmly believe that when a community comes together in prayer for their leaders, it helps foster the kind of leadership that leads to unity, development, and progress.

Consider leadership like driving a car. If the driver is attentive, wise, and skilled, then the journey will be safe and successful for everyone on board. But if the driver is distracted or lacking in knowledge, the trip could become dangerous for all passengers.
Whether or not we agree with our leaders, we must recognize that their success is the success of the entire nation. We are all passengers in this journey together, and for us to reach our destination safely, we must lift our voices in prayer for the guidance, wisdom, and well-being of our leaders.

I am not calling for blind allegiance or unquestioning loyalty, but rather for a collective sense of responsibility. By praying for our leaders, we are praying for the future of The Gambia. We are praying for peace, progress, unity, and prosperity.

Let us come together as one people, with one shared vision, and pray for the strength and success of our country. Only in unity can we create a Gambia that is peaceful, prosperous, and filled with opportunity for all.

May Allah continue to guide our leaders with wisdom and bless The Gambia with peace and prosperity.

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) is an international organization founded in 1969 consisting of 57 member states with a collective population of over 1.8 billion people. For successful collaboration with governments within the OIC framework, several key stakeholders should be involved:

1. Member States: The primary actors within the OIC are its member states. They should actively engage with the organization to ensure that policies and initiatives align with their interests and priorities. Member states' participation and commitment are crucial for the effective functioning of the OIC.

2. Government Officials: Government officials, including diplomats, ministers, and representatives from various ministries, play a vital role in working with the OIC. They contribute to policy formulation, represent their countries in OIC meetings, and coordinate with other member states to address common challenges.

3. Civil Society Organizations (CSOs): CSOs such as non-governmental organizations (NGOs), advocacy groups, and think tanks can provide valuable insights, expertise, and feedback to governments and the OIC. They often represent diverse voices within member states and can contribute to more inclusive and comprehensive decision-making processes.

4. Academia and Research Institutions: Academic institutions and researchers can contribute through data analysis, research findings, and policy recommendations. Their expertise in areas such as economics, social sciences, and international relations can inform evidence-based policymaking within the OIC.

5. Private Sector: Collaboration with the private sector, including businesses, industry associations, and entrepreneurs, is essential for economic development, trade, and investment within OIC member states. Public-private partnerships can drive innovation, create employment opportunities, and stimulate economic growth.

6. International Organizations: Cooperation with international organizations such as the United Nations (UN), World Bank, and regional bodies can enhance the OIC's capacity to address global challenges, promote peace and security, and achieve sustainable development goals.

7. Youth and Women's Groups: Engaging youth and women's groups is crucial for promoting inclusivity, diversity, and social empowerment within OIC member states. Their participation can lead to more equitable policies and initiatives that benefit all segments of society.

By fostering collaboration and partnership among these stakeholders, governments can work effectively with the OIC to address common challenges, promote mutual cooperation, and advance the interests of member states and their populations.

When hosting the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), a country should prioritize several key actions to ensure a successful and meaningful event:

1. Security and Logistics: Ensure robust security measures to safeguard participants and guests. Coordinate logistics such as transportation, accommodation, and venues to accommodate the OIC's needs.

2. Diplomatic Protocol: Follow diplomatic protocols and etiquette in dealing with delegates from member countries. Provide appropriate protocol officers and interpreters to facilitate communication.

3. Agenda and Themes: Develop a comprehensive agenda addressing important issues for the OIC members, such as economic cooperation, political stability, cultural exchange, and humanitarian concerns.

4. Hosting Events: Organize events showcasing the host country's culture, heritage, and achievements. This could include cultural performances, exhibitions, and tours of significant landmarks.

5. Dialogue and Collaboration: Encourage open dialogue and collaboration among member countries to foster understanding, trust, and cooperation. Facilitate discussions on regional and global challenges facing the Muslim world.

6. Media and Communication: Engage with media outlets to ensure accurate coverage and promote the objectives of the OIC meeting. Utilize social media and digital platforms to reach a wider audience and share updates.

7. Sustainability: Incorporate sustainability principles into the event planning, including eco-friendly practices, waste management, and promoting sustainable development goals.

8. Legacy and Follow-up: Plan for a lasting legacy from the OIC meeting, such as ongoing partnerships, initiatives, or agreements. Follow up on commitments made during the event to ensure implementation and progress.

By focusing on these areas, a country can effectively host an OIC event that contributes to the organization's goals and strengthens cooperation among member states.
