Yahya Jammeh repeatedly pushed the message that The Gambia must produce more of its own food instead of depending heavily on imports.

Today, with food prices affecting ordinary Gambians, one question deserves a serious national conversation:

What exactly did President Yahya Jammeh do for peace in Sierra Leone and how much of that history do we really know?

There is an important conversation we should have without insults, political hatred or rewriting history.

Historical records show that The Gambia played an active role in ECOWAS efforts to resolve the conflicts in Liberia and Sierra Leone, including peacekeeping contributions. There is also a documented 1998 account of President Yahya Jammeh offering to mediate between the Sierra Leone government and rebels.

But let's be clear: Sierra Leone civil war ended through the efforts of many actors, including Sierra Leonean leaders, ECOWAS, the United Nations, international partners, peace agreements, disarmament and the people of Sierra Leone themselves. President Kabbah officially declared the war over on 18 January 2002.

So here is my question to Gambians, Sierra Leoneans, Africans and the entire world:

πŸ‡¬πŸ‡² Do you believe Jammeh peace efforts and The Gambia role in the Sierra Leone peace process deserve more recognition?

🌍 Should African leaders who contributed to peace efforts be properly acknowledged, even when we disagree with other parts of their political record?

And to those who criticize Jammeh, let's have an honest debate: acknowledging something positive he may have contributed does not mean ignoring or denying the serious allegations and controversies surrounding his rule.

History should be examined from all sides.
