Police Urge Prosecution of Former IEC Chairman Over Corruption Allegations

Police investigators have recommended that Alieu Momar Njai, the former chairman of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), face charges of corruption and abuse of office, according to The Republic, which says it has reviewed a confidential police report.

The recommendation follows a ten-month probe triggered by a special audit into the IEC’s finances. The audit, conducted in 2024, flagged serious irregularities, including the transfer of more than 301 million dalasis into the private bank accounts of returning officers for election expenses. Auditors reportedly raised concerns after the IEC failed to provide bank statements to account for the spending.

According to The Republic, investigators concluded that Mr. Njai authorized nearly 16 million dalasis in unauthorized allowances to IEC staff. Police are also urging charges against the commission’s finance director, Anthony Robert Secka, accusing him of both negligence and diverting public funds into private accounts.

The report further highlights that the IEC allegedly overpaid a contractor by close to $100,000 and breached government procurement procedures.

Mr. Njai, now 91, is celebrated for presiding over the 2016 election that ended Yahya Jammeh’s decades-long rule. He stepped down from the IEC earlier this year.

The case file has been submitted to the Ministry of Justice, which will decide whether to proceed with charges against the former officials.

PRESS RELEASE:

GAMBIA ARMED FORCES DISMISS SEVEN PERSONNEL FOR CONDUCT PREJUDICIAL TO GOOD ORDER AND DISCIPLINE

Banjul, Wednesday 19 August 2025: The Gambia Armed Forces (GAF) wishes to inform the general public that seven of its personnel have been officially dismissed with immediate effect for acts constituting Conduct Prejudicial to Good Order and Discipline, contrary to Section 78 (1) of the Gambia Armed Forces Act (GAFA) 1985, Cap 19:01 Vol IV Revised Laws of The Gambia. Their dismissal was premised upon the conclusion of an internal investigation into serious breaches of operational conduct and military discipline.

This action follows the arrest of two privately owned speed boats and a yacht on 14 May, 5 and 12 June 2025, linked to activities that compromised national security and the integrity of our naval operations.

Investigations led by military intelligence, in collaboration with relevant security agencies, uncovered compelling evidence of deliberate and coordinated misconduct. Among the findings were:

a. The unauthorized preparation and launching of two privately owned speed boats.

b. Cell site analysis and communications data revealing direct involvement of the dismissed personnel.

c. Corroborated statements and observation of coordinated movement among the individuals involved.

d. Receipt of monetary rewards and other material benefits, including Tobaski rams.

e. Compromised Operational Integrity and betrayal of assigned duties.

Notably, the individuals were found to have aided a clandestine network operating under the guise of ALTIMA SEA SPORT LIMITED, which is currently under scrutiny for activities inconsistent with its declared purpose.

As a result, the following personnel have been dismissed from the GAF with immediate effect:

a. Lieutenant (N)Abba Nyassi
b. Fleet Chief Petty Officer (FCPO) Musa Dampha
c. Warrant Officer Class 2 (WO2) Ismaila Jobe
d. Chief Petty Officer (CPO) Musa Jammeh
e. Chief Petty Officer (CPO) Alagie Secka
f. Chief Petty Officer (CPO) Ebou Marong
g. Leading Seaman (LS) Lamin DK Sanneh

The dismissed personnel, acted in direct violation of military ethics, oath of service, and national trust. Their continued presence in the Armed Forces particularly within the Navy would pose a clear and unacceptable risk to operational security and mission integrity.

The Gambia Armed Forces upholds a zero-tolerance policy toward any form of collusion, corruption, or compromise of our core values. The actions of these individuals were not isolated lapses in judgment but organized and premeditated acts that undermined public trust and the integrity of the service.

This decisive action underscores the GAF’s unwavering commitment to upholding discipline, maintaining professional standards, and safeguarding the integrity of the institution. The Armed Forces leadership wishes to reassure the public that indiscipline or misconduct of any kind will not be tolerated, and appropriate measures will always be taken to protect the image, values, and operational effectiveness of the Gambia Armed Forces.

The Gambia Armed Forces remains resolute in its duty to defend the sovereignty and territorial integrity of The Gambia, while upholding the highest standards of military discipline and public trust.

Tribalism in The Gambia 🇬🇲

18/08/2025

This kind is egoistic hedonistic recklessness can only be described by a term I shall coin; a hybrid of Mandingka and English.

That is the only way to effectively describe Essa Faal’s condescending words towards our first ever university and the brilliant minds it has been producing over the years.

This is nothing but
“elitist-tarangfambulism” : the attitude of feeling superior to others and using that as license to demean and insult everyone because you feel that there will be no consequences.

What the vulture said about UTG graduates is a blatant lie. We have UTG graduates excelling in top universities around the world. In graduate schools from Oxford University to Harvard and other top universities in Africa and the Middle East, our graduates are doing wonders.

We have UTG graduates excelling in top global institutions like the IMF, World Bank, the AfDB, the IsDB and the UN.

Back home we have produced and continue to produce Ministers, Ambassadors, CEOs in public and private institutions, top medical doctors and nurses to name but a few.

But Essa and his fellow elitist-tarangfambulists will never recognize that because they hated the establishment of the University of The Gambia as Jammeh strove to democratize our education sector.

Essa and co are yet to accept the fact that the sons of farmers and fishermen can now become doctors and lawyers thanks to the UTG. Their elitist ethos will never ever accept this reality; so they have resolved to trash talk the UTG and use their friends and relatives at institutions like the Law School to pick and choose who should be allowed to pass their exams to become enrolled as legal practitioners.

They have established this bully-mechanism to the extent that one of the top local government officials in this country has become untouchable on social media because any student at the Law School who criticizes this man could risk failing his exams and lose his life-long dream of becoming a lawyer.

This is the reality of our New Gambia but the laid out unrestrained machinations of Vulture Essa Faal and co will never succeed in this country.

A man who cannot turn around “gelleh-gellehs” to transport his supporters can never turn around and become President in this country.

His best bet is to Turn Back and go to doing what he is best at: defending murderers like Charles Taylor and switching sides at legal platforms like the ICC from
Defence to Prosecution at the behest of the highest bidder!

It is what it is: the vulture is mischievous!

In countering the lies peddled on coffee time by the common braggart Abdoulie Sanyang, Major Gilbert and ADC Pateh Bah, have similarly described Abdoulie's narration of the July 22nd takeover as "all garbage". Pateh and Gilbert were on top of events on the fateful day as orderlies to council members- Jammeh, Sanna Sabally and team.
They also downplayed that Abdoulie Sanyang was NOT around during the invasion of state house by the AFPRC Junta as he (Abdoulie) falsely claimed during his interview with Peter. Abdoulie's job was a clerk typist and was never a battalion soldier, as he lied.
On who actually masterminded the '94 coup, they both disclosed that former president Yahya Jammeh orchestrated the coup and NOT Lt Basirou Barrow as the disgruntled liar Abdoulie Sanyang narrated. In fact, out of his cowardice, Basirou Barrow pulled out at the last minute and as a matter of fact, Jammeh being the most senior Lt among the liberators who was firm on executing the plan to rescue the country from the grips of Jawara's maladministration, became the obvious successor.

LATEST UPDATE ON THE CASE OF THE GAMBIA ARMED FORCES (GAF) AND DRUG CARTEL TRAFFICKING SYNDICATE!

ADVANCE COVER-UP

Open Gambia learned from last week about the dismissal of about seven soldiers, mainly Navy personnel and a police officer.
Arrested in connection with the drug cartel syndicate and handed over to DLEAG for possible prosecution.
1. W02 Dampha Musa
2. CPO Secka Alhagie M
3. CPO Marong Ebou
4. CPO Jammeh Lamin
5. LS Badjie Lamin DK
6. W02 Jobe Ismaila
7. Police officer posted at the state house.
8. Captain Abba Nyassi's command has made a recommendation and referred to the president for dismissal with disgrace.
Still, nothing has been reported in the press for about a week since the decision to terminate the services of the following officers.

BACKGROUND OF COVER-UP

For months, in the arrest of about a dozen Security personnel, the grand cover-up of the GAF, mainly Gambian Navy personnel, in the case involving conspiracy on a drug trafficking syndicate continues.

The GAF media unit, Drug Law Enforcement agency or any other government stakeholders' law enforcement agency makes a press statement concerning the massive scandal from the initial stage of the alleged conspirators' apprehension.

Even though a few days ago, the GAF immediately sent out a press release commenting on the arrest of a soldier on allegations of involvement in the mass killing of the Valtures. However, still, not a single statement was released over months later, about a dozen soldiers who were arrested, linked to the drug cartel. The conspiracy involving the soldiers and the drug cartel must be hitting the highest level of the GAF command for this silence to continue.

Also, a few days ago, the Gambia's drug law enforcement agencies, DLEAG, immediately sent out a press release when an Indian Businessman and two Guinean-Bissauan nationals were arrested on allegations of drug trafficking. But still no press release for the detained soldiers.

Why have the concerned stakeholders not reported the arrests of about a dozen military personnel in connection with the serious conspiracy? Why isn't the mainstream press reporting the arrest of about a dozen soldiers and inquiring about the reason for their arrest?

It is very unusual for the Stakeholders not to respond to the agitation. The two online platforms, the very popular What’s on Gambia, have agitated the case a few times at Open Gambia. We are following up and have agitated the case more than five times without any reaction from the authorities or mainstream media platforms.

Also, why are none of the civilian cartel members linked to the drug trafficking conspiracy arrested and investigated? The likes of Silaba Samateh, Faringmang Saho, Yusupha Saidy, and Mohammed/ Lamin Jabbie? Soldiers weren't working alone.

Why were the two foreign suspects, a Senegalese and a Moroccan, arrested with one of the boats and released on bail, fully aware that they would abscond from the Gambia's jurisdiction?

The State is applying a cover-up strategy. As per their usual mode of operandi in killing off cases to serve their interests, they launched a scam investigation pretending to follow due process and the rule of law while protecting the Catel members, who are financial benefactors of the NPP party.

They tampered with evidence by releasing the cartel suspects to ensure there is no credible witness testimony and undermining the integrity of the drug evidence, making sure there are no tangible exhibits to present during the trial and with the help of the media, the case gets silenced, allowing it to reach a natural death.

Referring the dismissed soldiers to the DLEAG is further part of the conspiracy to bury the case without evidence; the case would be forgotten like the hundreds of cases already hurriedly dismissed. The soldiers would be victims of selective justice while the cartel, with the support of the NPP administration, continues to lead our country to destruction.

The entire state's law enforcement agencies and financial regulatory oversight agencies are complicit with the drug cartel, with support from the NPP administration, in turning the country into a Narco State.

Concerns are raised within the senior ranks of the GAF and the corridor of power, attributing the absence of the president appointing a Defence Minister to the incident of GAF personnel involved with the drug cartel in the trafficking of drugs, as the president favoured choice to appoint as Defence Minister CDS Mamat Cham is alleged to playing a role with Cartel who are mainly suspected to be part of the president political financiers. As the cover-up succeeds, the president is expected to fill the Defence Ministry vacancy soon.
