President Adama Barrow Joins Senegal in Celebrating 65 Years of Independence

Dakar, Senegal โ€“ April 4, 2025

In a powerful show of regional solidarity, President Adama Barrow of The Gambia joined his counterpart, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye of Senegal, to mark the 65th Independence Anniversary of Senegal in the heart of Dakar. The grand ceremony, held at Place de la Nation, brought together heads of state, dignitaries, diplomats, and thousands of citizens to commemorate a historic moment in Senegalโ€™s post-colonial journey.

The celebration was not just ceremonialโ€”it was deeply symbolic. With dazzling military parades, cultural exhibitions, and patriotic displays, the event echoed the triumphs, resilience, and aspirations of a nation that broke free from colonial rule in 1960. For President Barrow, whose country shares deep historical, cultural, and familial ties with Senegal, the occasion was a reminder of the unbreakable bond between the two peoples.

โ€œWe are more than neighborsโ€”we are brothers and sisters tied by blood, culture, and destiny,โ€

President Barrow was heard saying to journalists on the sidelines of the event.

The Gambian delegation, which departed Banjul on April 3, included senior officials from the presidency and foreign affairs ministry. President Barrowโ€™s presence was widely seen as a diplomatic gesture reinforcing The Gambiaโ€™s commitment to regional peace, integration, and cooperative progress.

Observers noted that the warm reception accorded to the Gambian president by Senegalese officials highlighted the improved relations between the two nations, especially after years of strained dynamics during past administrations. Under the new leadership of President Fayeโ€”elected earlier this yearโ€”the celebration carried the weight of political renewal and youth-driven transformation.

While no bilateral meetings were publicly announced, insiders believe the two leaders may have informally discussed upcoming ECOWAS priorities, security cooperation, and cross-border trade strategies.

As both nations look to the future, this shared moment in Dakar marks not just a day of celebration, but a recommitment to a future of African unity, mutual respect, and progress.

Gambia Revenue Authority Achieves Record D6.7 Billion Collection in First Quarter of 2025

Banjul, The Gambia โ€“ April 5, 2025

In a landmark achievement, the Gambia Revenue Authority (GRA) has announced a record-breaking revenue collection of D6.7 billion during the first quarter of 2025. This impressive figure underscores the authority's unwavering commitment to enhancing fiscal performance and supporting national development objectives.โ€‹

March 2025 was particularly noteworthy, with the GRA collecting an unprecedented D2.6 billionโ€”the highest monthly revenue in its history. This milestone reflects the effectiveness of strategic reforms and the dedication of the GRA team.โ€‹

Commissioner General Yankuba Darboe attributed this success to several key factors, including the implementation of digital reforms and enhanced enforcement mechanisms. He highlighted the significant impact of the fuel marking program, which alone generated over D1.3 billion in revenue during this period. โ€‹

The GRA has set an ambitious annual revenue target of D23 billion for 2025, necessitating an average monthly collection of nearly D2 billion. The first quarter's performance indicates that the authority is well on its way to achieving this goal. โ€‹

In addition to these efforts, the GRA and the Ministry of Finance have signed an addendum contract focusing on revenue assurance in the telecommunications and rental income sectors. This initiative aims to enhance revenue collection from these areas and address existing gaps. โ€‹

The GRA's remarkable performance has garnered praise from international finance and economic institutions, positioning it among the leading revenue collection agencies in Africa. โ€‹
The Point

As the GRA continues to implement innovative strategies and reforms, it remains committed to achieving its revenue targets and contributing to The Gambia's economic growth and development.
