US President Donald Trump announced on Saturday, 15 March, that he had ordered a “decisive and powerful” military strike against Houthi forces in Yemen.
The strikes will target Houthi bases, leaders, and missile defences, the US president said, vowing to use “overwhelming lethal force” until their objectives are achieved, as the Houthis reported on the same day that 18 people were killed and many injured in US-UK air strikes on Yemen’s capital, Sanaa.
Trump also issued a stern warning to Iran, demanding an immediate end to its support for the Houthis.
In solidarity with Gaza, the Houthis had attacked Israeli-linked ships in the Red Sea with missiles and drones since late 2023.
The group halted its attacks when a ceasefire in Gaza was declared in January but threatened to resume them after Israel blocked all aid into Gaza following the end of the ceasefire’s first phase in early March.
