The United Democratic Party (UDP) has extended its warm wishes to Gambians on the occasion of the country's 61st Independence Anniversary.

In a statement, the party acknowledged the nation's progress and resilience, but also highlighted the challenges hindering development, including economic corruption, insufficient transparency, and a high cost of living. "Sixty-one years after independence, Gambians continue to demonstrate remarkable strength and hope," the statement read.

The UDP expressed concern over the rising prices of essential goods and services, which have put a strain on ordinary citizens, and called on the government to adopt urgent measures to ease the hardship. "As we mark this anniversary, we call on the government to adopt urgent, practical measures to ease the hardship confronting our people," the party said.

According to the statement, rising cost of essential goods and services, including food, housing, and transportation, is taking a toll on ordinary Gambians urging the government to take urgent action to alleviate the economic strain on households.

The statement also highlighted the need for compassion and responsiveness, particularly during Ramadan and Lent, and urged the government to prioritize community-centered security strategies to address growing insecurity and rising crime.

"We are also concerned about growing insecurity and rising crime, which fuel fear in communities across the country. Sustainable national progress depends on safety and stability. We urge the government to prioritize effective, community-centered security strategies and to strengthen law enforcement in a transparent and accountable manner". The statement said.

The UDP reaffirmed its commitment to democratic governance, economic justice, transparency, and protecting Gambians' dignity and security.

After choosing to decline the position of chairman at PDOIS’s congress, veteran politician Sidia Jatta elaborated on his decision, highlighting his longstanding commitment to nurturing the next generation of leaders within the party. He emphasized that over the years, he has carefully mentored and guided many young party members, equipping them with the skills, knowledge, and vision necessary to carry forward the party’s mission.

Reflecting on the importance of leadership succession and political responsibility, Jatta remarked, “only bad farmers plant seeds and abandon them once they begin to grow,” stressing that it is now time for the younger generation he has cultivated to take the reins. His statement resonated as both a call for continuity and a reminder that sustainable leadership depends on empowering those prepared to build upon the foundation laid by their predecessors.
