Declaration from Chairman Yankuba Darboe and 22 Councillors of Brikama Area Council.
In the wake of recent resignations and defections from the United Democratic Party (UDP) by some of our honorable colleagues at the Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC), we, the UDP Councilors of the Brikama Area Council (BAC) and the People's Chairman Hon Yankuba Darboe, wish to clarify our position to the general public.
We acknowledge receipt of their resignation letters and sincerely respect their decisions as part of their democratic and political civil rights. Out of respect for their choices, and since no negative reasons were cited, we refrain from making further comments on their departure.
However, we wish to make it categorically clear that Chairman Yanks & 22 UDP Councilors of the Brikama Area Council remain fully committed and loyal to the cause of the UDP under the distinguished leadership of Lawyer Ousainou Darboe.
As councillors representing the largest and most populous region of The Gambia ( the Power House), we reaffirm our collective resolve to support and defend the UDP in all legitimate and lawful ways. We have publicly declared our unconditional endorsement of Lawyer Ousainou Darboe as the party’s flagbearer, and we see it as our duty and responsibility to do everything within the laws of The Gambia to ensure he ascends to the State House. This remains our objective and ultimate goal.
While 11 councilors from KMC may have withdrawn their membership, the 22 Councilors of the Brikama Area Council - West Coast Region proudly maintain their unwavering commitment and loyalty to Lawyer Darboe and the UDP.
We align ourselves fully with the ideologies, values, and founding principles of the UDP, and we hold in high esteem the tireless efforts and sacrifices of the party’s founding fathers. We will not abandon these genuine causes for the sake of a few selfish opportunists who have no value for integrity.
As the name implies, the United Democratic Party stands for unity and democracy, guided by its constitution and internal regulations. What we will not accept is for individuals who are not members of the UDP to dictate how our great party should manage its internal affairs. The UDP is blessed with a pool of intellectuals and dedicated patriots who understand the party’s governance structures and modus operandi.
While we respect those who have chosen a different path, we remain steadfast in our determination to defend the integrity and image of our great party — against all odds, by any lawful means, and at any price necessary.
The UDP is here to stay — for the people, by the people, and with the people of The Gambia. 🇬🇲
