Muhoozi Kainerugaba, son of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, announced he will not run in the 2026 presidential election, instead endorsing his father.

Kainerugaba, a military leader, had previously suggested the need for new leadership in Uganda but stated he was called to prioritize his military role. Museveni, who has ruled since 1986, has not confirmed his candidacy for a seventh term.

Kainerugaba emphasized that future leadership will likely come from the military, given the current political climate marked by repression and controversy.

The Wall Street Journal reported that U.S. officials believe a cease-fire deal between Israel and Hamas is unlikely before President Biden leaves office in January 2025. Despite this, Pentagon spokesperson Sabrina Singh stated that the deal is not falling apart, echoing Secretary of State Antony Blinken's previous claim that 90% of the deal had been agreed upon.

The U.S., Qatar, and Egypt have been mediating the conflict, but the deal has faced obstacles, including Israel's demands regarding military presence in the Philadelphi corridor and negotiations over hostage exchanges.

Gabon’s former President Ali Bongo Ondimba, who was overthrown in a military coup last year, Thursday announced withdrawing from political life and asked for clemency for his imprisoned wife and son who he said face “violence” and “torture.”

In a message sent to media, Bongo said "I would like to reaffirm my withdrawal from political life and the definitive renunciation of any national ambition," adding “I would never wish to constitute a risk of threat, unrest and destabilization for Gabon.”

Bongo also said he called for "appeasement, the end of violence and torture against my family,” especially his 61-year-old wife Sylvia Bongo Ondimba, and their eldest son Noureddin Bongo Valentin.
Bongo’s wife and son are being held at Libreville's central prison over embezzlement allegations, in conditions denounced by their lawyers.

Bongo, whose family dynasty held power for 55 years, has been living in his private estate in Libreville since he was removed from power. Gabon’s military government says the deposed leader is free to leave the country.
