The US Embassy has once again warned its citizens residing in South Africa to stock up on food supplies due to the country's persistent power crisis and also warned of the possibility of a civil unrest.

"The US Embassy would like to take this opportunity to remind US citizens travelling to or living in South Africa that South Africa has a Travel Advisory Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution due to Crime and Civil Unrest," the statement said.

Load shedding leaves 5 women trapped in lift for almost two hours in KZN mall

A group of women were rescued after almost two hours when they got stuck in a lift in a mall in northern KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday.

uMlalazi Local Municipality spokesperson Nonhlanhla Jele said mayor Queen T Xulu applauded the swift reaction by the local Fire and Rescue team following the jamming of a lift in The Atrium shopping centre in Eshowe central business district.

“The victims were rescued with the assistance of emergency services and one of the defence department workers, Staff Sergeant Moholo. Moholo is part of the Health Outreach Programme rolled out by the Department of Defence in local schools and communities.”

uMlalazi Fire Chief Officer Xolani Blose said the incident was unfortunate and could have been avoided by placing notices warning customers not to use lifts during scheduled load-shedding times.

Xulu assured the locals her municipality was giving this incident the prioritised attention it deserved.

“While we are going to robustly engage the centre authorities on the precautionary measures that could have been exercised, we also urge the community to exercise caution whenever they intend to use lifts. Our emergency reaction units will be on standby to ensure the safety of the locals,” Xulu said.

On Wednesday, stage 2 load shedding will be implemented at 5am to 4pm, followed by stage 3 load shedding at 4pm to 5am. A further update will be published as soon as any significant changes occur.

Gauteng Driver Cheats Death after slamming into the back of a Stationary truck .

Reports indicate that the driver of a light motor vehicle lost control on a straight, slamming into the back of a truck.

When medics arrived on scene, they found the driver, also the only occupant in the vehicle heavily entrapped under the rear of the truck.

Rescue crews battled for three hours using hydraulic tools to free the critically injured man, while advanced life support paramedics worked to stabilise him.

Once freed from the wreckage, the man was rushed through to hospital having suffered poly-traumatic injuries.

Msunduzi officials ‘disturbed’ by photos of workers sleeping on graves

The circulating pictures show workers from its parks department, which is responsible for the cleaning of parks and other public facilities, relaxing in a graveyard with some of them sitting while others are sleeping on the tombstones. It is not clear when the pictures were taken.

In a statement, the municipality said it was aware of what it labelled as “disturbing photographs”.

“Such unacceptable behaviour is condemned with the contempt it deserves and will not be tolerated,” read the statement issued by the municipality on Monday afternoon.

The statement further indicated that the city manager Lulamile Mapholoba has ordered an investigation into the incident.

“The municipality will not condone such behaviour and can confirm that processes are in place for the implicated employees to be charged for misconduct, and for putting the municipality into disrepute,” the statement said.

The municipality stressed that people hold graveyards and tombstones in very high regard, as spiritual places where they honour their loved ones’ memories, and images of people sitting and sleeping on them were a sign of disrespect.

This is not the first time that workers from the KZN capital have been caught in a compromising position.

Previous photos have shown workers from the same department asleep during the day, while some are cooking food during working hours, raising concerns about their productivity.

My God | This picture is so utterly heart-breaking. A Turkish father, Mesut Hancer, holding the hand of his dead 15yr-old daughter in the rubble of a building crushed by the earthquake. Devastating.
