Flying Colours of Legacy: The Woman Behind PNG’s Flag 🇵🇬!

Tuesday September 9, 2025.

AS Papua New Guinea celebrates 50 years of Independence this September 16, we honour a name woven into the very fabric of our national identity, Susan Karike Huhume.

At just 15 years old, Susan designed the national flag, a bold and unifying symbol that has flown proudly since 1971.

Her vision captured the spirit of a diverse, independent nation before it had even taken its first official breath.

This touching photograph (attached) was taken in February 1986, where Susan is seen with her husband, Nanny Huhume, and their three sons, Justin, Joseph, and Philip.

More than a national icon, she was a devoted wife, mother, and quiet trailblazer whose contribution shaped the identity of a people.

As we look back on five decades of nationhood, we remember Susan not just for the flag we see, but for the courage, creativity, and conviction behind it.

Her legacy flies with every breeze. Her story lives in every fold.

Bambra Primary School Students Celebrating The 50th Independence Anniversary on 4th of September, 2025.

The students commemorated our country's birth on the 16th of September, 1975 with creative dances, drama, songs and the Young Abelam Dancers stole the show by seeking the audience attention, which couple of requests were entertained by getting another chance on stage...

We have to be proud as citizens of Papua New Guinea and celebrate our special day with our unique culture and creativity.
Let unity prevail as we honour the history and inspire our future.
