It has been confirmed one warder, and five prisoners have been killed and injured in the shootout in the attempted break out by prisoners assisted by armed men on Thursday May 29, 2025.

The reason of such a brazen attack was because the armed men were trying to remove certain high-risk prisoners from within the camp. Of the six people killed and injured, one is a Seargent who was only trying to open up the prison door for the prisoners, when he was attacked.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (Western End) Clement Dalla in a brief interview said that the Special Services Division Mobile Squad 06 and Mt Hagen Sector Response Unit are patrolling and providing backup security to Baisu prison.

When asked of the infiltration of the camp, ACP Dalla said he was aware of the attack but could not give more information.

From reliable information received, the armed men were not outside the prison but had snuck into the prison camp and secretly hid inside the compound. When the Correctional Services officer entered the prison camp to let out prisoners he was attacked by the gun men, he tried to defend himself, but was allegedly shot at close range.

In the confusion that followed, two more prisoners were shot, and another three injured. The warden was rushed to Mt. Hagen Hospital, but was pronounced dead later.

Police are now investigating the incident.

A New Dawn for BUIYABI CS πŸ‡΅πŸ‡¬βœŒοΈ: Deputy Administrator Dr. Emmanuel Kumbio's Visit to Buiyabi Correction Facility.

**Buiyabi, Southern Highlands Province** – In a groundbreaking moment for the BuiyabiCorrectiol Facility, Dr. Emmanuel Kumbio, the Deputy Administrator, made a historic visit to the Buiyabi Correction Facility. This visit was a big step in strengthening the connection between government officials and the local communities they serve. It highlighted the commitment of the Southern Highlands Provincial Government (SHPG) to reach out and understand the realities faced by those working in remote areas with limited resources.
When Dr. Kumbio arrived, he was warmly greeted by the facility management, who were genuinely thankful for his visit. β€œThis is the first time a top government official from Mendi has come to our place,” the facility’s director shared, clearly moved. β€œIt shows that our leaders care and want to understand the challenges we deal with every day.”
Dr. Kumbio’s visit is seen as a key step towards closing the gap between government and the grassroots. As he walked through the facility, he took time to talk with both staff and inmates, listening carefully to their stories and concerns. His visit reminded everyone that every part of the province deserves attention and support, no matter how isolated it may be.
This visit isn’t just about checking how the facility is running,” Dr. Kumbio said in a brief talk with the staff. β€œIt’s about building a culture of understanding and teamwork. We need to make sure the voices from our far-off areas are heard and that we tackle their challenges together.”

The Southern Highlands is known for its tough terrain, which often makes it hard to access important services and resources. By visiting Buiyabi Correction Facility, Dr. Kumbio and his team aimed to shine a light on the unique struggles faced by workers in these far flung areas. His visit calls on other government officials to step out into their communities and promote a more inclusive style of governance.
Community leaders and members expressed hope after the visit, seeing it as a possible turning point. β€œWe hope this is just the start of a new relationship with the provincial government,” said an elder from the community. β€œWhen our leaders take the time to listen and understand our lives, we can work together for a brighter future.”

Dr. Kumbio’s visit to Buiyabi Correction Facility is a strong reminder of the positive changes that can happen when government officials engage directly with the people they serve. As he left, the air was filled with hope for a renewed partnership between the provincial government and local communities, inspiring a shared vision of progress and resilience for the Southern Highlands.

In a world that often overlooks the struggles of communities, Dr. Kumbio’s visit stands as a bright light of hope, encouraging all leaders to ensure every voice is heard and every challenge is met with a strong determination to make things better.

Prisoners are questioning the financial position of this country πŸ’°πŸ’΅πŸ‡΅πŸ‡¬

"If this country does not have the financial and administrative capacity to take care of prisoners, then release some of the low risk prisoners or those who are eligible for Parole" a prisoner in Buimo had expressed his frustration.

The main MSI compound at Buimo houses over 2000 prisoners all cramped in overcrowded and unhygienic cells.

Their quality and quantity of food has been degrading over the recent months.

The same situation is being faced by other prisons nationwide πŸ‡΅πŸ‡¬

Suppliers who provide rations to prisons are also waiting for their long overdue payments from the Correctional Services.

Commanders are calling on the Marape-Rosso government to address this problem immediately.

Theodist Supports Bomana Prison's Rehabilitation Program with Stationery Donation

Theodist Limited is proud to continue supporting the Bomana Prison Rehabilitation Program with another donation of much-needed stationery supplies. This is the second time we have helped, and it shows our ongoing commitment to supporting communities and education across Papua New Guinea.

Pastor Simon Kuman, who leads the Theological Society, has been running a Bible School inside Bomana Prison for over ten years. This year, the program has grown to include 200 male and female prisoners, 40 of them are current students, and there are also 10 Correctional Services Officers who are part of the broader initiative. The stationery we donated will help the prisoners continue their studies and personal development, giving them the tools they need to improve their lives.

Pastor Kuman shared his thanks, saying, β€œWe are very grateful for the support from Theodist. The pens, notebooks, whiteboards, and other supplies will help our students keep learning. Many of the prisoners have told us during last year’s donation that they haven’t had access to basic materials like this for years, and it means a lot to them.”

The Bible School is not just about teaching religion – it also helps prisoners learn to read and write and develop skills they will need when they leave prison. Last year, 19 inmates graduated from the program, able to read and write for the first time, which shows how successful the program has been.

At Theodist, we believe in the power of education to change lives. This donation reflects our belief in giving people the chance to turn their lives around. Supporting this program is one way we’re helping to make a positive difference in our communities.

Kevin Anderson, National Sales & Marketing Manager at Theodist Limited, said, β€œWe are proud to help support programs that improve education and well-being. The Bomana Prison Rehabilitation Program is doing important work, and we believe in the potential of every person to change and grow.”

Theodist is committed to helping improve education and literacy in Papua New Guinea. We will continue to support initiatives that help individuals build better futures and create stronger communities. We are excited to keep making a positive impact on people’s lives and the communities they live in.
