DJ Jem (Jem Stavros) – Biography
Jem Stavros, known professionally as DJ Jem, began his journey into electronic music in 2003 on the island of Crete, Greece. His first exposure to the genre came at the age of 18, inspired by influential mix CDs from artists such as Hernán Cattáneo, Danny Tenaglia, Steve Lawler, and Carl Cox. A pivotal moment came in the summer of 2003, when witnessing world-class
DJs perform at the legendary open-air club Homus proved to be a life-changing experience. In 2006, Jem took his first steps into music production, releasing original material on the German label Pesto Music, founded by his close friend Jon Silva. As his reputation grew, he performed at major clubs across Crete before securing his first residency in the summer of 2008 at Big Fish Club, where he played every Monday. The residency quickly became one of the island’s most successful weekly events. That same summer, he shared the decks with Nick Varon and performed at venues including Caldera Beach Bar, Sundays Pool Bar, Room 109, and Envy Club. Before relocating to Brighton, UK, later that year, Jem delivered a standout performance in Skopje, marking his first notable appearance in the Balkans. From 2008 to 2011, Jem was active in the Brighton club scene, performing at venues such as Coalition After-Hour Club, H Bar, and Madame Geisha, while holding a bi-weekly residency at Cube Bar. Each summer, he returned to Crete to host and perform at events across the island. In the summer of 2011, Jem played the closing set at Localive Dance Fest on Plakias Beach, Rethymno, delivering a memorable finale in front of a crowd of more than 700 people. Returning permanently to Greece in 2012, Jem continued performing at prominent venues including Rafinaria Club, Matrix Club (Hersonissos), Nafpigio Bar (Rethymno), and Plastelina Bar (Heraklion). In 2015, he was at the Communicate parties at HERLIN Project Space in Heraklion, where he held a monthly residency. The event series quickly became one of the most successful nights on the island. In March of the same year, he shared the stage with Deborah De Luca for one of the most notable events of that season. In 2018, Jem reunited with Nick Varon for a special night at Soho Nights, Heraklion, followed by a standout year in 2019 performing at Barney’s Bar, widely regarded as the city’s leading hotspot. Despite the global pause in 2020, Jem made a strong impact as a producer with his EP “Naked,” released within the Melodic House & Techno genre. The release reached the top of Beatport’s charts in December, ranking alongside artists such as Moby, KAS:ST, Patric Baumel, and Rodriguez Jr. Driven by a deep and evolving passion for music, DJ Jem continues to refine his sound and remains poised among the new generation of high-level DJs and producers.
