SuchThatCast - Philosophers' Podcast SuchThatCast.com SuchThatCast is a podcast dedicated to getting to know some of the most influential philosophers (broadly speaking) of today.

It seeks to provide an alternative to most other philosophy podcasts (many of which are excellent), by taking the form of a face-to-face conversation (I will never do a phone/skype interview) where the guest is free (and encouraged) to share information about themselves that may not be appropriate in other forums: this includes stories about their unique and often unconventional career paths, semi

nal events and figures in their lives, undeveloped ideas and generally whatever they are passionate about. The name of the podcast may sounds obscure at first, but it is inspired by the way in which logicians bind variables, to entities (what is unique about you) and domains (what do we have in common) — which is often expressed in the form of “there is an x such that x is y” or “For every x there is a y such that x loves y”. Basically, the title expresses my hope of binding stories, properties and opinions to these individuals.

I've decided to cancel this year's live panel at the IACAP conference in Ferrara. I simply have no time for editing these days, so it would have just ended up being another episode in the pipeline gnawing at my conscience. I am still hoping that I can start putting out episodes regularly in the near future, but with no support and way too much on my plate it will probably not happen until this fall at the earliest. Please stay subscribed to this page and I'll let you know when the next episode is out (there is one in the vault, but it still requires a lot of editing that I simply can't find the time for and I don't want to release it until I'm happy with the quality)

Finally found some time to start editing the live panel from this summer's IACAP conference. Hope to have it ready by the end of this week. I will also most likely have time to interview someone in Berlin in a couple of weeks. Please let me know if you have any recommendations.

I'm very sorry this has taken so long (I introduce the episode with a short explanation of why), but the new episode is finally up. This time I talk to John Cottingham who was an important influence in my undergrad days and largely responsible for occasionally referring to myself as a Cartesian. We talk about his early training in Latin and Greek, his experiences with all aspects of student life at Oxford in the 60s and the seminal figures during those days (in particular Anthony Kenny and Bernard Williams), the differences between philosophy then and now, and his increasing emphasis on the importance of spirituality. Enjoy

The experiment with a live panel at IACAP'14 resulted in episode 11, featuring Selmer Bringsjord, Gregory Chaitin, Wilfried Sieg, and Mariarosaria Taddeo. This episode is perhaps most interesting for those with a background in formal methods and philosophy of mathematics, and admittedly might be a little irrelevant for others. Still, it should offer some insight into the tremendously interesting background of four people vastly more intelligent than me. It was inspiring and for the most part a successful experiment to do this live, and I can only hope that the recording does the event some justice. A regular episode is just around the corner.

Preparing for tomorrow's experiment with doing a live version of SuchThatCast, where I will be talking to Selmer Bringsjord, Gregory Chaitin, Wilfried Sieg and Mariarosaria Taddeo. If any of you happen to have interesting stories about and/or questions for any of these, please let me know.

I'm honestly not sure how this will pan out, but many of the podcasts that inspired me to start this one occassionally do live episodes, where a selection o

Despite appearances, SuchThatCast is still alive. Episode 10, featuring Kristin Shrader-Frechette, has just been posted and I'm aiming for monthly updates from now on. Shrader-Frechette is one of the most influential philosophers of today, battling big industry on a daily basis on behalf of poor minorities affected by pollution and greedy business practices. I hope you'll find it as inspiring as I did.

Just an update to let you know what's going on, given that the previous episode is getting quite old. I just finished recovering the interview with Shrader-Frechette (see background story in previous post), so that should be up as soon as she approves the edit. I've also got an interview scheduled with John Cottingham this weekend, which might just be the most well-known "classical" philosopher on the show so far. There are also several improvements to the show, including a new intro and a new tagline. I realized that "philosophers' podcast" sounds a little "elitist" and doesn't quite convey what I want to convey. The new tagline will be "SuchThatCast - Behind the Philosophy" -- which more accurately reflects my mission to capture the background for their philosophical work.

A new episode is in the pipeline, and will be up shortly. In the meantime, an iTunes review states that SuchThatCast is "good stuff, but jeez, the abrasive proggy intro music interspersed with dialogue is so annoying and ridiculous. Skip through it and enjoy". I've had some doubts about the intro myself, so I'm thinking about replacing it -- in particular not to blast listeners' ears with heavy drumming right off the bat. Let me know if you have any comments or suggestions.

It sometimes feels as if this podcast project is jinxed. I have already had to cancel two interviews due to illness on the day of interview (Richard Kearney and Kim Sterelny). Then, while in Lisbon last week, my laptop got stolen, which meant that I lost all original recordings, including one not yet published hence irrevocably lost (with Bernd Carsten Stahl - the recorded files are so large that I haven't made backups until trimming them down to size *lesson learned*). The theft also meant that I had to cancel a scheduled interview with Andrew Feenberg. Until now, I also thought I had lost a marvelous interview with Kristin Shrader-Frechette, but just now realized that I still have a downsampled MP3 version of it, which I will do my best to restore. All of this explains why the release schedule is somewhat thwarted, but I hope to have that up soon. Thanks for your patience, and SuchThatCast will return stronger this autumn.

Not too far away from my new goal to publish an episode once a month, here's episode 9, featuring John Dupré -- a philosopher that influenced my tremendously in my undergrad days. We spend quite some time discussing the background for the book as well as its advancement of a pluralistic model of science as opposed to the common notion of reductionism. We also discuss his complex path through academia, and his work on feminism, evolutionary psychology and other issues centred around the issue of essentialism and the disunity of science [as always, I'd be very happy for any help you can provide in spreading the news]

SuchThatCast has now reached episode 8, and the latest guest is John Sutton from Macquarie University. Sutton has been head of department for both philosophy and cognitive science, and in many ways exemplifies what a contemporary philosopher should be. We discuss this quite a bit, along with all kinds of topics ranging from the Occult in literature, skills in sports and shared memories (my apologies for some minor audio issues in this episode)

Unfortunately I fell ill while staying in Canberra, so interviews with my ANU heroes had to be cancelled :( I still brought one interview home, and it's a good one - should be up some time in the next week. Right now I'm trying to enlist one or more of these keynotes: http://www.philos.rug.nl/GCTP2013/
