Do we want AI art or not? The human paradox.

We suddenly got the ability to "create" art, in a matter of seconds. And we liked it, until video game companies made us realize the problem.

AI blew us away. By AI in this context I mean tools like ChatGPT, Midjourney and DALL-E.

Even though we got excited when AI first appeared, as it allowed the non-artistic people to create, or more accurately, to generate images, I feel that users like you and me have lost some of that original excitement.

Yes, we got excited. I got excited. I lack the tools - or talent - so it gave me an opportunity to experiment with “art” and generate a few images.

It felt cool. I was fully aware this was a tool.

I made a few pictures and avatars for personal use. I knew that this was not art. Not in the sense that a graphic designer would create it. It was by no means something made by a human. A human creates a piece of art based on whatever their soul inspires them to do.

I wrote about Arc Raiders recently and during my research, it was hard to miss the criticism Call of Duty has received for using AI-generated images in the game since 2023. Gamers are not happy and rightfully so. They pay for a title that is developed by a huge studio. Activision can afford artists, so why do they use AI-generated images? Activision said, and I’m paraphrasing, to support their teams, but the creative process is led by humans.
