AZA4ICE at the 24th Meeting of the Contracting Parties to the Barcelona Convention
📍 Cairo, Egypt | 2–5 December 2025

Join us at the side event “Pathways to a Thriving Mediterranean Blue Economy: Resilience, Innovation, and Sustainability” on 4 December, 14:00–15:00 (Malachite I+II, Floor 2).

The session will highlight emerging knowledge on Blue Resilient Economy approaches and showcase innovations supported by the Interreg Euro-MED Programme’s Innovative Sustainable Economy Mission. AZA4ICE will be presented as a key example, developing spatial tools for circular aquaculture and contributing to a regenerative, future-ready Mediterranean.

We’re pleased to announce that Professor Stephanedes from the University of Patras, Lead Partner of AZA4ICE, will be one of the speakers.

Looking forward to an inspiring discussion on strengthening sustainability, innovation, and resilience across the Mediterranean Blue Economy.

🌊 The AZA4ICE LiRRIE Event took place yesterday in Lefkada!
At the Regional Administration Building, partners, researchers, and regional stakeholders came together for the 2nd LiRRIE Network Meeting, continuing the effort to advance circular and inclusive aquaculture across the Ionian Islands.

The technical partners IMC and IFAPA led the AZA4ICE methodology training and facilitated rich, participatory discussions, creating space for collaboration and shared learning.

🔍 Yesterday’s highlights included:
• Updates on the Lefkada lagoon pilot, including monitoring progress
• Exploration of innovative and circular practices in aquaculture
• Constructive dialogue aimed at strengthening regional cooperation and co-developing sustainable strategies

This meeting built on the momentum of the LiRRIE Network launch in Greece, reinforcing our commitment to knowledge exchange and resilient, community-driven aquaculture in the region.

The Region of Ionian Islands, together with the University of Patras (Lead Partner) and its AZA4ICE partners, is pleased to invite you to the 2nd LiRRIE Network Meeting, taking place today in Lefkada.

This event builds on the successful launch of the LiRRIE Network in Greece and reinforces our shared commitment to responsible, innovative, and community-driven aquaculture.

The two main technical partners — IMC and IFAPA — will join as trainers of the AZA4ICE methodology and will facilitate participatory discussions with regional stakeholders.

What’s on the agenda?
- Updates on testing the AZA4ICE methodology in the Lefkada lagoon pilot and progress on monitoring activities
- Exploration of opportunities for innovation and circular practices in aquaculture across the Ionian Islands
- Collaborative dialogue to strengthen regional cooperation and co-develop strategies for inclusive, sustainable aquaculture

🌊 AZA4ICE at the sun&blue Conference 🌊

Yesterday at the III Blue Tourism & Economy Congress in Almería, AZA4ICE and IFAPA co-hosted the session: “Designing the Blue Future Together: Circular and Inclusive Aquaculture in Coexistence with Tourism.”

Expertly moderated by Manuel Manchado (IFAPA), with insights from: Veronica Santinelli, Fabio Carella, Francisco P. Zurita, Johan Robbens and Margarita Laboisse.

🔹 We explored how aquaculture and tourism can coexist sustainably in coastal areas.
🔹 We highlighted the importance of territorial dialogue for a fair and collaborative blue economy.
🔹 We shared good practices, challenges, and opportunities to move toward more circular and inclusive aquaculture models.
🔹 And we reinforced the value of co-creation and participatory governance tailored to local communities.

A big thank you to all speakers and participants for contributing to an inspiring and forward-looking exchange.

🌊 3rd LiRRIE Meeting in Cádiz: A Successful Day of Collaboration! 🇪🇸🐟

On 13 November 2025, the AZA4ICE project held its 3rd LiRRIE (Living Responsible Research & Innovation Ecosystems) meeting at the Faculty of Marine Sciences in Puerto Real, Cádiz - hosted by IFAPA.

🎯 Objective of the session:
- To present, discuss, and validate the C-AZA methodology applied in the Bay of Cádiz, supporting the creation of Circular Allocated Zones for Aquaculture.

🔍 Key highlights:
✅ Participants reviewed and exchanged insights on the C-AZA results
✅ The effectiveness of circular planning tools was evaluated
✅ Stakeholders co-designed the Action Plan for sustainable aquaculture in coastal areas

The meeting brought together representatives from public institutions, academia, and the aquaculture sector. Their contributions strengthened the Bay of Cádiz as a model for circular and resilient aquaculture across the Euro-Mediterranean region. 🌍🌱

🌊 Community in Action!

This Saturday, 8th November, Adria Innovation Harbour (AIH) organized an aqua clean-up at Lake Ježevo and Lake Čiće, near Velika Gorica in Croatia 🧤

The initiative was carried out in cooperation with the Odra Sport Fishing Association and the local community, bringing together volunteers passionate about protecting our freshwater ecosystems.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us in making a difference! 💧💙
