Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera (IPMA) hosts the 3rd LiRRIEs meeting of the AZA4ICE Project to advance Circular Aquaculture ♻️

On November 25, the 3rd LiRRIEs (Living Responsible Research and Innovation Ecosystems) meeting took place in Olhão, as part of the AZA4ICE project, funded by the Interreg Euro-MED program.

The event gathered stakeholders from the five major sectors of society - Academia, Industry, Government, Civil Society, and the Environment - all connected to the Ria Formosa lagoon, to share ideas and drive responsible innovation together.

This project aims to drive the transition towards a circular and inclusive aquaculture, with this meeting playing a crucial role in ensuring the proposed recommendations are practical and focused on the common good.

During the meeting, the results from the AZA4ICE methodology were presented, along with the circularity baseline assessment in the Ria Formosa lagoon, using the BLUEfasma tool. Proposals for the circular aquaculture Action Plan in Ria Formosa were also discussed.

Together, we can build a better and more sustainable world! 🌏

At our recent workshop, experts from multiple fields came together to exchange ideas, challenges, and opportunities for moving toward more sustainable aquaculture systems. The event centered on five key principles: ecosystem preservation, resource-use hierarchy, nutrient recycling, renewable energy, and waste minimisation.

In the video, Manuel Manchado reflects on how the session unfolded - how it sparked new concepts, fresh ideas, and honest discussions on constraints and obstacles, offering a range of expert perspectives on advancing circular economy approaches in aquaculture.

You’ll also hear insights from Dr. José Manuel Guerra (University of Seville), who explores aquaponics, real examples and key aspects of circularity, as well as the role of integrated multitrophic systems in amphipod production, highlighting limitations, possibilities, and emerging business opportunities.

🌊🦪 3rd LiRRIE in Montpellier, in France
On 25 November 2025, Pôle Mer Méditerranée brought together 72 participants in Montpellier for the 3rd LiRRIE (Living Responsible Research & Innovation Ecosystems), dedicated to sustainable and circular aquaculture.

📈 The morning session presented the results of the C-AZA method, which allows us to explore opportunities for diversification in aquaculture within the Thau lagoon.

🐟 In the afternoon, we began drafting an action plan for a circular and sustainable aquaculture in the Mediterranean. The objective was to promote the discussions around innovation and diversification in the sector, adaptation to climate change, sharing feedback and best practices, and identifying potential funding opportunities.

🎯 To summarize the day:
- A wide range of stakeholders gathered (aquaculture professionals, scientists, public authorities, etc.);
- Encouraging results helping to better understand diversification opportunities in the Thau lagoon;
- Valuable exchanges to share experiences, best practices, challenges, and visions for the future.

Thank you to all participants and speakers involved in this collective effort toward a sustainable and circular aquaculture.

🌊 AZA4ICE at COP24 in Cairo, Egypt!

Yesterday we joined the side event “Pathways to a Thriving Mediterranean Blue Economy” at the Barcelona Convention COP24.

AZA4ICE was highlighted as a key example of how circular aquaculture and spatial tools can support a more resilient Mediterranean.
We were proud to be represented by Prof. Yorgos Stephanedes from the University of Patras.

🇧🇬 The 3rd LiRRIE event took place in Varna, hosted by the Institute of Fish Resources (IFR-Varna) under the AZA4ICE project. A full day of discussions brought together local and regional stakeholders to explore the future of sustainable and circular aquaculture in the Black Sea.

From the presentation of Bulgaria’s C-AZA pilot results to collaborative talks on the upcoming Action Plan and future AZA roadmap, the meeting marked another important step in advancing responsible aquaculture practices within the LiRRIE network.

A big thank you to all participants for their insights and commitment to shaping a more resilient aquaculture sector in Bulgaria.

AZA4ICE at the 24th Meeting of the Contracting Parties to the Barcelona Convention
📍 Cairo, Egypt | 2–5 December 2025

Join us at the side event “Pathways to a Thriving Mediterranean Blue Economy: Resilience, Innovation, and Sustainability” on 4 December, 14:00–15:00 (Malachite I+II, Floor 2).

The session will highlight emerging knowledge on Blue Resilient Economy approaches and showcase innovations supported by the Interreg Euro-MED Programme’s Innovative Sustainable Economy Mission. AZA4ICE will be presented as a key example, developing spatial tools for circular aquaculture and contributing to a regenerative, future-ready Mediterranean.

We’re pleased to announce that Professor Stephanedes from the University of Patras, Lead Partner of AZA4ICE, will be one of the speakers.

🌊 The AZA4ICE LiRRIE Event took place yesterday in Lefkada!
At the Regional Administration Building, partners, researchers, and regional stakeholders came together for the 2nd LiRRIE Network Meeting, continuing the effort to advance circular and inclusive aquaculture across the Ionian Islands.

The technical partners IMC and IFAPA led the AZA4ICE methodology training and facilitated rich, participatory discussions, creating space for collaboration and shared learning.

🔍 Yesterday’s highlights included:
• Updates on the Lefkada lagoon pilot, including monitoring progress
• Exploration of innovative and circular practices in aquaculture
• Constructive dialogue aimed at strengthening regional cooperation and co-developing sustainable strategies

This meeting built on the momentum of the LiRRIE Network launch in Greece, reinforcing our commitment to knowledge exchange and resilient, community-driven aquaculture in the region.
