✨ S1: One Quetzal
📍 Location: Antigua Guatemala 🇬🇹
Today we got 8.50 Quetzales change after making a small purchase in cash at a small convenience store in Antigua Guatemala. The denominations were:
1 X 5 Quetzales bill
3 X 1 Quetzal coins
1 X 0.50 Quetzal coin
Being back in Guatemala after a few years, it has been a while since I held Guatemalan coins in my hand. So today, after receiving those big round 1 Quetzal coins, I looked at them inquisitively.
Noticing that, the shopkeeper told me, “I can give you bill instead of coin.”
(The entire conversation was in Spanish, sharing the English translated version here.)
“No, no, this is fine”, I quickly replied with a reassuring smile.
He said, “Let me show you”.
He opened his cash register, took out a fresh and crisp 1 Quetzal bill, and pointing to a hologram on it, explained me that this was a limited edition 1 Quetzal bill.
The bill is beautiful. My eyes shined, and I said with a big smile, “Ok, I will exchange one 1 Quetzal coin for one 1 Quetzal bill.”
He handed me the bill immediately for the coin, and I thanked him, saying, “I’ll keep this bill as a souvenir”.
So, this is my souvenir from Guatemala, not just the bill but the memory of this interaction with a shopkeeper in Antigua Guatemala, and I got this souvenir today only because of the typical Latin people culture: warm, friendly and going out of their way to make your day with little gestures and acts of kindness that are more precious than money can ever buy! 😇
