Serena Williams and Alexis Ohanian, despite their substantial wealth, have chosen to instill the value of hard work and financial literacy in their 7-year-old daughter, Olympia. They’ve implemented a structured allowance system where Olympia earns $7 per week by completing specific chores, such as feeding the dog, placing clothes in the hamper, and making her bed five days a week. This arrangement was formalized through a written contract, with Serena acting as Olympia’s representative during the negotiation process.
The couple’s approach aims to teach Olympia the connection between effort and reward. For instance, when Olympia wanted a $125 Tamagotchi watch, she had to save her allowance over several weeks to afford it, experiencing firsthand the discipline of budgeting and delayed gratification.
This parenting strategy reflects Williams and Ohanian’s commitment to raising grounded children who understand the value of money and the importance of earning it, rather than expecting it. Their method has garnered attention as a model for instilling financial responsibility and work ethic in children. Thoughts?? Is this good parenting practice??
