Press Release by The Georgetown Chamber of Commerce & Industry

GCCIโ€™s Business Development Forum to Equip MSMEs for 2026 Growth Opportunities

As Guyana continues on a trajectory of rapid economic expansion, the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) is positioning micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) to take full advantage of the current and emerging opportunities. The Chamber will host its flagship Business Development Forum (BDF) November 13 โ€“ 14, 2025 at the Pegasus Suites & Corporate Centre, under the theme โ€œEmpowering Businesses for a Resilient Future.โ€ The two-day event is designed to equip MSMEs with the tools, insights, and networks they need to strengthen competitiveness, attract investment, and align their operations with the countryโ€™s evolving economic priorities.

President of the GCCI, Mrs. Kathy S. Smith, said the Forum is part of the Chamberโ€™s ongoing effort to support the private sector, particularly MSMEs, in transitioning from survival to growth through increased access to knowledge, financing, and policy alignment.
โ€œThe Business Development Forum is about preparation,โ€ Smith said. โ€œWith the governmentโ€™s focus on diversifying the economy, investment into infrastructure, as well as the thriving energy sector, this is the time for businesses to position themselves, understand where the opportunities lie, and plan how to invest wisely,โ€ she stated.
The Forum will bring together business leaders, policymakers, and development partners for two days of informative discussions and networking sessions focused on finance, sustainability, diversification, local market pe*******on, and export readiness. It will also feature expert presentations and practical guidance on how enterprises can build resilience and tap into emerging growth sectors beyond oil and gas.
Support desks will also be available to provide one-on-one consultations on financing, business development, and market compliance, giving MSMEs a direct avenue to guidance and technical assistance.
Mrs. Smith said that the GCCIโ€™s vision is to make the Forum a practical and results-oriented space rather than a ceremonial one.
She posited, โ€œToo often, small businesses attend events but leave without next steps. This Forum will be different,โ€ she explained. โ€œWeโ€™re curating sessions that point directly to funding sources, business tools, and export pathways that MSMEs can act on.โ€ She added that the initiative forms part of GCCIโ€™s broader mission to strengthen private-sector capacity and ensure that local enterprises are ready to compete both regionally and globally.

โ€œOur MSMEs are the heart of Guyanaโ€™s private sectorโ€”they employ people, drive innovation, and sustain communities,โ€ Mrs. Smith said. โ€œAs the economy continues to grow, the GCCI is focused on ensuring that these businesses are not just spectators, but active participants in Guyanaโ€™s success story.โ€

The Business Development Forum 2025 is expected to attract participants from across Guyanaโ€™s business landscape and will provide a platform for networking, knowledge exchange, and collaboration among enterprises preparing for the opportunities of 2026 and beyond.

In a touching story of dedication and partnership, Berbicians Nicholas and Raveena Ackree will be celebrating a significant milestone when they graduate on December 6th from the University of Guyana Berbice Campus (UGBC) โ€“ both of them with a Bachelorโ€™s degree in Education. In addition to their individual accomplishments, this coupleโ€™s academic journey is nothing short of a test of endurance through seven years of marriage, strengthened by faith and the support of each other.

Nicholas, a teacher at the Corriverton Primary School, pursued a Bachelorโ€™s Degree in Primary Education, while Raveena, a teacher at No. 72 Nursery School, pursued her studies in Early Childhood Education within UGโ€™s Faculty of Education and Humanities (FEH). Studying together has been a special journey for them, one that began years ago when they completed their Associate Degrees in Education at the Cyril Potter College of Education (CPCE), an experience they both described as one of their best decisions.

However, like many of the three thousand six hundred graduands who will walk the graduation stage when the university host its series of Convocation exercises scheduled for November 20 to December 6, this young coupleโ€™s academic journey was filled with severe challenges, balancing demanding workloads, teaching, and raising their one-year-old child, all while managing household responsibilities. โ€œIt was not always easy, but it was rewarding. At the time, we were caring for our one-year-old, so balancing family life, teaching, and studies was difficult. What made it possible was understanding, teamwork, and trust,โ€ Nichols said.

Detailing her journey, Raveena echoed similar words, noting that their greatest strength was supporting each other through every stage. โ€œWe took turns with the baby so one of us could complete assignments or keep the house quiet for online presentations. It was a partnership built on love, patience, and faith,โ€ she said with much pride.

Their faith in God and the support of their parents anchored them through the toughest moments. Yet, amidst their studies, grief struck deeply when Nicholas lost both his mother and grandmother during his first year at university. Overwhelmed by sorrow, he questioned whether continuing was worth it. โ€œThat was a very painful and difficult period because my mother was my best friend and biggest supporter from the very start of my academic journey. At one point, I wanted to quit, but Raveenaโ€™s support meant everything. She encouraged me and held things together when it felt impossible,โ€ Nicholas recalled.

Together, Nicholas and Raveena found the strength to keep moving forward. For Raveena, the long nights, endless lesson plans, and constant juggling of responsibilities tested her patience, but the thought of their child and the example they were setting pushed her onward. โ€œOur families and even our students motivated us. Knowing that we could inspire others by reaching this goal kept us going, even on the hardest days,โ€ she detailed.

The couple believe their shared experience has not only deepened their relationship but also strengthened their teaching. โ€œHaving a partner who understands the academic struggles and small victories makes a huge difference. We learned from each other and brought new ideas into our classrooms. This experience reminded us that weโ€™re not just doing this for ourselves, but for our son and the students we teach,โ€ Raveena said.

Looking ahead, Nicholas and Raveena hope to continue their academic journey together as their plan is to pursue their Masterโ€™s in Education. Their dream is to contribute even more meaningfully to the education sector and help mould the next generation of leaders. โ€œWe hope our journey inspires young people and couples to believe that no dream is too big and no challenge too hard when you are determined and eager to succeed.โ€ Raveena said.

Despite facing so many hurdles, including losing their loved ones, Nicholas and Raveena have persevered. The proud couple are set to graduate with distinctions from the University of Guyana. The Berbice Solar Farm is now nearing completion, representing another major step forward in Guyanaโ€™s push toward renewable energy. This follows the recent commissioning of the 5MWp Onderneeming Solar Farm on the Essequibo Coast, further highlighting the governmentโ€™s steady progress in advancing the nationโ€™s clean energy goals.

According to the Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL), the Berbice project is part of a wider national initiative to diversify the countryโ€™s energy mix and cut carbon emissions in keeping with the Government of Guyanaโ€™s Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) 2030.
