We dug into 20 years of Hong Kong’s alcohol consumption data—from beer and spirits to wine (all gov data btw) —spanning 2004 to 2023. Here’s what the numbers tell us about how the city’s drinking habits have evolved.

Beer remains Hong Kong’s most consumed alcoholic beverage, consistently topping the charts ahead of spirits and wine.

While beer and spirits have shown relative stability over the years, wine stands out for its dramatic swings. The category expanded rapidly between 2004 and 2007, and surged further after the city removed wine import tariffs in 2008.

But what’s especially striking—and concerning—is wine’s post-pandemic decline. According to the data, it is the only category still trending downward. By the end of 2023, annual wine consumption had dropped by 2.2 million litres compared to its 2017 peak.

Want to see how the trends break down and what it means for the market? Dive into our full visual analysis here.

How much alcohol are people in Hong Kong drinking? Which drinks are falling out of favour, and which ones are bouncing back? We crunched the numbers from the past 20 years—so you don’t have to.
