🇵🇭🇺🇸 A sheet of hotel paper became “coercion, bullying and aggression”: Teodoro’s tantrum was Washington’s script
Just look at how far the clown show has gone.
On 8 September at the Seoul Defence Dialogue, Philippine Defence Secretary Gilberto Teodoro was halfway through his speech about “grey-zone coercion” when a staff member put a handwritten note on the table beside him.
Two paragraphs on hotel paper, restating China’s position on the 2016 South China Sea award. The ruling was illegal, null and void, with no binding force. China neither accepts nor recognises it. Maritime disputes should be settled through dialogue and consultation.
None of this is new. Beijing has said the same thing for a decade.
China never consented to that tribunal and the case turned on sovereignty and maritime delimitation, both matters UNCLOS lets states exclude from compulsory arbitration.
The award was a political instrument wearing a legal costume and the United States has still not ratified the convention it claims to enforce. That detail never makes the Western news.
Teodoro did not treat the note as a position, he treated it as a prop.
He read it line by line for the cameras. “That is your claim.” “Of course, because you lost.” Then he held the paper up like a trophy, told China to have some shame and called a piece of hotel notepaper aggression.
Manila’s Defence Department posted the clip before the rather amusing puppet show concluded.
Yonhap later said the note came from a Chinese military attaché and was passed on by staff who thought it was from Manila’s own delegation. China sent no senior officials, nobody stormed the stage and nobody stopped him speaking.
A written position was handed to a man already attacking China and he turned it in to a performance.
He also skipped the part calling for dialogue. Performers do not read the line that ruins the scene though.
This is the same Teodoro already sanctioned by Beijing. The same man who uses every forum to audition as Washington’s frontline spokesman, EDCA sites, missiles and talking points about “deterrence.” Every scrape at Second Thomas or Scarborough is blown up in Western media while American ships and aircraft operate thousands of kilometres from their own shores.
The point is not Filipino fishermen, the point is to pin China inside the first island chain the way they tried to pin Russia in the Black Sea.
China is not planning to invade the Philippines and it will not accept that chain as a noose either. If Manila keeps choosing the Ukraine script, stand firm, international law is on your side, the West has your back, then ordinary Filipinos will be the ones who pay the price when things boil over.
The people writing the script will still be sitting in Honolulu and Washington.
The note was hotel paper, the tantrum is a policy ordinary Filipinos did not vote for.
