原來是媽媽德明中學校友，媽媽成日話香港睇唔起中文，無中文又理解唔到中國歴史，唔理解中國歴史就做吾好父母官！當然仲有中國幾千年文化同先人智慧。

陳耀南和他的母親
陳耀南教授是英華書院的名譽校友，自幼家貧，15 歲方知是被收養。父親長年身在外洋，母子相依為命三十多年，1958 年獲獎學金入讀崇基學院，以第一名畢業，他為照顧母親，放棄了副校長保送他到哈佛大學深造的機會。1963年取得羅富國師範學院文憑後，受聘於英華書院，1965 年到中文大學補讀一年後取得學士學位，升為中文科主任，1968 年以非教徒身份破格升為副校長，翌年獲文學碩士學位，1973 年開始任職高等學府，1979 年獲香港大學哲學博士。正是：平生道路九羊腸，悲苦哀愁母先嘗，吐哺甘露黃金光，育養春暉日日張。
Professor Y.N. Chan is the Honorary Alumni of Ying Wa College. In his 15, he knew he was an adopted orphan. His father worked overseas and he lived with his mother for more than 30 years. In 1958, he graduated from Chung Chi College. He took care his mother and did not accept the opportunity to further his study at Harvard University. In 1963, he obtained a diploma of education from the Northcote Training College of Education and was employed by Ying Wa College. In 1966, he obtained a bachelor's degree from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and was promoted to the head of the Chinese Department of Ying Wa College. In 1968, he was promoted to vice principal. He obtained a master's degree in 1969 and a Ph.D. in 1979. He started to serve for various tertiary institutes in 1973.
