Pui O beach was buzzing this morning, with paddlers from across Hong Kong preparing to outrace each other across the bay.

Outrigger Canoeing has grown in popularity across the world. Not only competitively, but also as a great way to keep fit, to boost your mental health and to train and socialise with friends as you head out on your ocean adventures.

Outrigger canoes or were thought to have originally been developed by the Austronesian speaking peoples of the islands of Southeast Asia for sea travel. It is believed that the use of outriggers may have been initially caused by the need for stability on small watercraft after the invention of crab claw sails some time around 1500 BCE.

Outrigger boats were essential in the transportation of Austronesians both eastward to Polynesia and New Zealand and westward across the Indian Ocean as far as Madagascar.

Though todays teams might not being heading quite that far, but they certainly looked like they would be giving their all, as they raced off the beach to battle it out over the 7km course set for the day.

If this has sparked your interest and you fancy trying out this unique watersport, then check out the clubs across Hong Kong and drop them a message, we are from the enthusiasm we saw on the beach today that they will be pleased to hear from you.

For you Lantau types clubs on the island are South Lantau Paddle Club and Lantau Boat Club Paddle Section - LBC
