Our warmest congratulations to pian@haykmelikyanpianist Hayk Melikyan who has been awarded the Movses Khorenatsi Medal - the highest state honour for cultural achievements in Armenia. Pictured here with President Vahagn Khachaturyan at the ceremony last weekend, the prestigious medal is awarded to individuals who have demonstrated outstanding achievements in the realms of culture, art, literature, education, social sciences, and sports. This much deserved honour coincides with Hayk’s latest release: Laudamus – Sacred and Secular works by George Gurjieff and Thomas de Hartmann.

G.I. Gurdjieff (c.1866–1949) was a most charismatic figure from the first half of the 20th century, as influencing the big names in Philosophy, the Arts, Mystical schools, and more. Born at the crossroads of cultures, Gurdjieff’s music weaves together Armenian, Greek, Kurdish, Persian, and Central Asian folk traditions, reflecting his lifelong quest for spiritual wisdom and enlightenment. Transcribed by Thomas de Hartmann (1885-1956), these evocative piano works blend Eastern mysticism and Western artistry, channelling ancient rituals, dances, and chants. Hayk Melikyan

A special work for a very special moon! September‘s full moon will be a stunning “blood moon”, set to rise today Sept. 7 — amid a total lunar eclipse, a rare moment of totality. The corn moon will shine for days. Weather permitting, the lunar eclipse will be visible across parts of Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia and New Zealand. Dvořák’s most famous aria, Song to the Moon, from his opera Rusalka, is here beautifully brought to life by pianist Carl Petersson , from Matthias Dobler’s transcription. The iconic melody, rooted in Slavic fairy tales, captures the water nymph Rusalka’s heartfelt plea to the moon in shimmering lyricism and Romantic spirit. Petersson’s refined touch and poetic phrasing vividly evoke the piece’s emotional depth, making his recording a captivating and intimate piano tribute to a timeless operatic masterpiece.

This month we encounter some of the most beloved chorales and melodies that Bach set during his lifetime. From the oft-heard Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme, BWV 140 to three different settings of Befiehl du deine Wege (A Mighty Fortress is Our God) to Nun danket alle Gott (Now Thank We All Our God), BWV 252, the sheer beauty and variety of Bach’s chorale work rarely get better than in these examples. And for those looking for something different, Es Ist Genug, BWV 60, No. 5 provides one of the most challenging and fascinating chorale works Bach ever composed. For August, the emphasis is on Bach’s ability to surprise the listener. Bach is often touted as a conservative composer and out of step with some of the more radical compositional techniques of his day. This could not be further from the truth. A few excellent examples include Chorale #2, In allen meinen Taten, BWV 367 for Bach’s usage of chord clusters; Chorale #7, Aus tiefer Not schrei ich zu dir, BWV 339 for his experimental nature in dealing with tonalities; and Chorale #26, Ach Gott, vom Himmel sieh darein, BWV 77, No. 6 for his startling lack of closure at the end of some
