[Global Connect] Hong Kong Expands Academic Collaboration with Kazakhstan

Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee highlighted growing education ties between Hong Kong and Kazakhstan during a visit to Nazarbayev University on June 3, as both sides moved to deepen international academic collaboration.

Lee met with university president Professor Waqar Ahmad and attended the signing of memoranda of understanding between Nazarbayev University and two Hong Kong institutions – the Education University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. The agreements are expected to strengthen academic exchanges, research partnerships and talent development.

The visit builds on an existing collaboration between Nazarbayev University and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, launched last year through a business programme focused on Eurasia.

Lee said Hong Kong is expanding its role as an international higher education hub and welcomed more students from Kazakhstan to study in the city. Around 500 Kazakhstani students are currently enrolled in Hong Kong, making them one of the largest student groups from countries participating in the Belt and Road initiative.

[Cultural China] Grotto Art Through the Lens: A Timeless Chronicle

A photography exhibition dedicated to China’s grotto art recently opened in Shaoguan, Guangdong. Using photography as its primary medium and chronology as its narrative framework, the exhibition brings together masterpieces of classical grotto art from across China, introducing this thousand-year-old stone-carved civilization to audiences in southern China.

High-definition images unfold in sequence, weaving a visual chronicle of China’s grotto art history. The photographs traverse vast landscapes to capture the diverse expressions of grotto artistry: from the radiant splendor of the Kizil Caves in the Western Regions and the austere majesty of the grottoes along the Hexi Corridor, to the imperial grandeur of the Yungang and Longmen Grottoes, as well as the refined elegance of Bashu rock carvings and the distinctive regional character of the grottoes of western Tibet.

The exhibition also features a restored standing statue of the Eleven-Headed Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva, a work that took the artist four years to complete. It offers visitors a vivid glimpse into the artistic sophistication and craftsmanship of Buddhist sculpture during the Tang Dynasty, making it an unmissable visual feast for admirers of ancient Chinese culture and art.

[GBA Thrills] China’s 3D Printer Exports Reach New Heights

China’s 3D printer industry is seeing rapid growth in overseas markets, with exports surging in the first four months of 2026 as global demand rises for affordable, high-performance devices.

Data from the General Administration of Customs showed that China exported 2.46 million 3D printers worth over US$900 million between January and April, representing year-on-year increases of 100 percent in volume and 110 percent in value. Consumer-grade models have been particularly well received abroad, thanks to their ease of use, reliability and competitive pricing.

Shenzhen remains at the centre of the industry’s expansion, accounting for nearly 86 percent of the country’s total 3D printer exports during the period. Local manufacturers are shipping products to Europe, North America, Latin America and the Asia-Pacific region while expanding overseas warehousing and logistics networks to improve customer service.

Driven by continued investment in research and development, Chinese companies are also introducing advanced features once limited to industrial machines, further strengthening the global appeal of their consumer-focused products.

[Green Highlights] Inside Guangzhou’s World-Leading Lychee Gene Bank

South China’s Guangzhou is home to the world’s largest lychee gene bank, where nearly 800 varieties of the fruit are cultivated and studied. The five-hectare orchard serves as both a living archive of lychee biodiversity and a centre for developing new varieties suited to future market demands.

China has cultivated lychees for more than 2,000 years and today produces around 70 percent of the world’s supply. Researchers in Guangzhou are building on that legacy through long-term breeding programmes, including the world’s first successful lychee-longan hybrid, the result of more than a decade of research.

Scientists are also developing new varieties with improved texture, flavour and resilience, while using digital technologies and big data to accelerate breeding and evaluation. Laboratory studies have further revealed the fruit’s nutritional potential, including high levels of beneficial compounds such as GABA, a functional amino acid.

With China’s lychee industry valued at about US$4.4 billion, these innovations could boost farmer incomes, expand export opportunities and offer consumers a wider range of high-quality fruit.

[GBA Thrills] Ink Art Exhibition Brings Illusory Landscapes to Dongguan

The fifth and final exhibition in the Greater Bay Area’s “Ink Art Ensembles” Exhibition Series, Illusory Landscapes, is now open at Dongguan’s Guancheng Art Museum, bringing together contemporary interpretations of traditional ink art by Hong Kong artist Barbara Choi and Greater Bay Area artist Wen Qiuwen.

Blending painting, animation and installation art, the exhibition explores themes of illusion, perception and renewal. Choi reimagines familiar Hong Kong landmarks, including the Yau Ma Tei Wholesale Fruit Market and Prince Edward Flower Market, within classical blue-and-green landscape compositions. Incorporating AI-generated details for the first time, she extends her ink paintings into immersive animated narratives.

Meanwhile, Wen combines traditional paper sculpture, lantern-making techniques, light and mirrored surfaces to create dreamlike installations that blur the boundaries between reality and imagination. The artists also collaborate on a striking joint work that merges floating sculptural landscapes with projected animation.

The exhibition runs until July 12 and admission is free.
