[GBA Thrills] Tech Powers 15th National Games in Guangzhou

A medical drone carrying blood products completed its first delivery for the Guangzhou zone of the 15th National Games, flying 20km in 12 minutes, about three times faster than ground transport and opening an aerial lifeline for emergency supplies. The drone can climb to 600m and operate in moderate rain and winds up to force seven, helping keep medical routes reliable even in difficult weather.

Venue lighting has been upgraded across multiple sites. Guangzhou’s Tianhe Sports Center now meets world-class standards, with lighting uniformity above 0.9 and shadow density below 90 percent. Anti-glare measures, light-pollution controls, show lighting, smart management systems and energy-saving technologies are all in use to protect athlete performance and improve the broadcast and spectator experience.

Together, these advances put technology at the core of the Games, strengthening safety and emergency response while turning competitions into a smarter, more dazzling citywide celebration.

[China Thrills] Apple CEO Joins Pop Mart’s 10th Anniversary Exhibition in Shanghai

Apple CEO Tim Cook kicked off his recent trip to China with a visit to Pop Mart’s THE MONSTERS 10th anniversary exhibition in Shanghai last week. The stop drew buzz from both tech and pop culture circles as Cook joined Pop Mart founder Wang Ning and artist Kasing Lung – the creator of the beloved character Labubu – for a special tour of the exhibition.

Lung gave a live demonstration of creating Labubu illustrations on an iPad Pro, while Wang surprised Cook with a custom Labubu figurine holding an iPhone. The visit coincided with Cook’s participation in a livestream event announcing the latest updates on iPhone Air sales in China, due in-part to the country’s recent adoption of eSIM technology.

Celebrating a decade of Labubu, the exhibition showcases original sketches and collectibles from THE MONSTERS series. Following its Shanghai debut, the global tour will continue to Beijing, Tokyo, Paris, New York, and beyond.

[Cultural HK] Villain Hitting: Banishing Bad Luck, Hong Kong Style

Among Hong Kong’s many age-old traditions, villain hitting stands out for its unique mix of folklore and catharsis. Practiced mainly in Hong Kong and Guangdong, this centuries-old ritual is believed to drive away misfortune and negative energy.

The ceremony typically involves crafting a paper effigy symbolising one’s “villain”, a person or problem causing distress, and striking it with a shoe while the hitter chants to expel bad spirits. Once the effigy has taken enough blows, it’s burned to symbolise the end of one’s troubles.

While villain hitting can be performed any time of year, it’s most popular during Jingzhe, the “Awakening of Insects” in the Chinese lunar calendar, when spring’s arrival signifies renewal and rebirth.

Today, the underpass of Canal Road Flyover between Causeway Bay and Wan Chai remains the city’s most famous spot for this ritual – where locals and visitors alike can symbolically stamp out their bad luck and step into brighter days.

[GBA Thrills] Mascots Illuminate Guangzhou in National Games Spirit

With under a month to go before the opening of China’s 15th National Games, Guangzhou is bursting with colour and excitement. Streets, landmarks, and public spaces across the city are adorned with the Games’ emblem and beloved mascots, creating a lively and welcoming atmosphere for visitors and tourists alike.

The mascots – Xiyangyang and Lerongrong, inspired by the Chinese white dolphin – have become the talk of the town, dazzling crowds as they light up the Guangzhou International Media Port along the Pearl River. “I think the mascots are very adorable,” shared a visitor surnamed Zhou with a Chinese news outlet. “Against the backdrop of Guangzhou’s night skyline, they truly bring out the city’s unique charm.”

Taking place from November 9 to 21, the Games will feature 34 competitive and 23 mass sports events. Most competitions will be held across Guangdong Province, with Hong Kong and Macao co-hosting select events including golf, table tennis, fencing, and beach volleyball.

[China Travelogue] Pink Waves: Nantong’s Muhly Grass Blooms into a Fairytale

Nantong’s pink muhly grass is in peak season, transforming riverside slopes into clouds of rosy plumes. Fields of soft pink seed heads sway in the breeze, their drifting petals creating a dreamlike scene that makes visitors feel as if they’ve stepped into a fairytale.

Bathed in sunlight, the rolling beds and varied terrain create sweeping floral vistas along the Yangtze River shoreline. The blush-colored sea has become a popular spot for sightseeing and photography, with crowds pausing to admire the view.

This floral zone is a key feature of Nantong Langshan National Forest Park’s ecological restoration efforts. Following the relocation of ports and terminals, and years of dedicated work, the former industrial strip has been reborn as an ecological scenic belt.

Today, it’s not only a pleasant weekend escape for locals, but also a vibrant symbol of the city’s transformation from rust belt to riverside beauty.

[Cultural China] A Journey Back to Sui and Tang Dynasty in Luoyang

The ancient imperial capital of the Sui and Tang dynasties, Luoyang, was once the most flourishing cosmopolitan hub of its time. For over 530 years, it stood as a symbol of power and culture. Today, its well-preserved historical architecture is not only a protected national heritage site but also a popular tourist destination. To help visitors truly connect with its rich history, the site has introduced a range of immersive experiences that transport guests back to the glorious era of the Sui and Tang.

The day begins with a grand performance. As powerful music resounds across the Yingtian Gate, guards in golden armor march with ceremonial banners. Empress Wu Zetian, adorned in lavish robes, ascends before her courtiers in a spectacular reenactment of her coronation—a scene that leaves the audience in awe.

In addition to the performance, flower girls, street painters, and snack vendors around the site are part of the cast, engaging visitors in spontaneous interactions. A variety of immersive drama tours are also offered, allowing guests not only to see and hear—but to feel the pulse of ancient culture.

Would you embark on such a fascinating journey through time?

[China Travelogue] Tongjian Lake: Hangzhou's Perfect Autumn Getaway

The crisp autumn air makes this season ideal for outdoor excursions, and Hangzhou's Tongjian Lake has become a favored local destination for enjoying the fall colors. Spanning 1.35 square kilometers, the lake is embraced by 62,000 square meters of vibrant flower fields. Beneath the warm autumn sun, golden sunflowers, crimson cosmos, and yellow sulfur cosmos—among a dozen other varieties—create a breathtaking tapestry of colors, weaving together a scene of both warmth and romance.

Visitors immerse themselves in the autumn experience in various ways: some explore by bicycle, others on foot; some admire the distant hills, while others glide across the lake or set up camp along its shores. This year, striking new installations like a ‘Stairway to the Sky’ and a giant hat sculpture have been added, quickly becoming must-capture spots for photography enthusiasts.

Cyclists particularly appreciate the 10-kilometer lakeside route—though relatively short, it offers a refreshing ride accompanied by gentle breezes and floral scenery. Camping enthusiasts, meanwhile, are delighted with the well-maintained and fully-equipped camping areas, praising both their comfort and convenience.

[HK Thrills] Kowloon Walled City Recreated Through Immersive Film Exhibition

At the Kowloon Walled City Park, visitors can now explore the world of ‘Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In’ through an immersive movie set exhibition that showcases film artistry with Hong Kong history. The acclaimed film, which earned nine awards at the 43rd Hong Kong Film Awards, has brought its large-scale sets back to the original site of the Walled City for a three-year showcase.

The exhibition features eight themed ‘sections’ recreating scenes such as the No.7 Restaurant, barbershop, grocery store, and bone-setting clinic, along with new set additions like the football factory and plastic-moulding workshop. A highlight is the ‘Rooftop of Light and Shadow in the Walled City’, where visitors can sit and gaze at Hong Kong’s past cityscape, whilst projections and sound recreate the atmosphere of roaring, low-flying aircraft coming in to land at the infamous Kai Tak Airport.

Free and open to the public, ‘Kowloon Walled City: A Cinematic Journey’ celebrates both Hong Kong’s film industry and the legacy of the city’s heritage.

[China Travelogue] Cave Coffee in Foshan: A Cool Sip Beneath Ancient Rock

A new café tucked inside a cave on Xiqiao Mountain in Foshan blends raw geology with simple café comforts. Crushed-stone floors and natural light frame a round wooden bar and plain tables, letting the million-year rock textures do the decorating while the cave’s coolness acts like nature’s air conditioner.

Reaching the spot requires effort. Walkers from Xiqiao Mountain's South Gate face a 1.3-kilometre trail that takes about 30 minutes, while those taking the park shuttle must still climb roughly 600 metres of steps from the nearest stop. The trek seems to add to the appeal: visitors say the coffee tastes better after the walk.

The café sits in an area that contains the country’s largest and most complete underwater ancient human industrial site. Within days of opening the unusual venue drew crowds, selling about 1,000 to 1,500 cups a day and quickly becoming a must-see for curious travelers.

[Cultural China] Palace Museum Celebrates 100 Years of Living Heritage

Beijing’s Palace Museum is marking its centenary with a grand exhibition that captures the essence of Chinese civilisation and cultural continuity. Showcasing 200 priceless artefacts, the exhibition takes visitors on a journey through time, from ancient dynasties to modern preservation.

Divided into three sections – A Lineage of Civilisation, A Century of Endeavor, and Myriad Visions of Splendour – the display highlights treasures such as Emperor Qianlong’s 25 imperial seals and exquisite relics from the Silk Road, including a Tang Dynasty silver bowl and a Central Asian jade bowl. These pieces illuminate the unity in diversity that defines Chinese culture.

Founded on October 10, 1925, from the former imperial palace of the Ming and Qing dynasties, the Palace Museum has transformed from a royal residence into one of the world’s most visited museums, attracting over 17 million visitors in 2024. The centenary exhibition runs until December 30, celebrating a century of cultural legacy and heritage.
