[Green Tech] Innovative Ship Farm Brings Year-Round Fresh Food to Crew

At Marintec China 2025 in Shanghai, the China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) unveiled a pioneering smart farm designed for ship applications. The facility features a “vegetable-mushroom symbiosis” system, enabling year-round cultivation of edible fungi, vegetables, and fruits.

“By letting vegetables absorb carbon dioxide and mushrooms release it, the system allows both to grow in the same chamber…,” said Chang Yu, vice president of CSSC International Engineering Company. The design reduces energy use typically required to manage temperature differences and ventilation at sea.

Pesticide-free and capable of growing over 120 varieties, the farm ensures high standards of quality and safety. Using about 30 kilowatt-hours a day, it produces roughly five kilograms each of lettuce and mushrooms, lowering energy costs far below global standards.

Visitors, including shipowners, praised the innovation. “This is the solution… This is fresh food not only good for health, this is for their mental refreshment,” said ABM Zahidul Islan.

The smart farm promises fresh produce even in remote islands and arid inland regions.

[HK Thrills] Hong Kong Ballet’s Nutcracker Returns with Local Additions

Hong Kong Ballet’s acclaimed homegrown production of The Nutcracker returns this December for its fifth festive season, having delighted more than 140,000 audience members and surpassed 100 performances since its 2021 debut. The production, which earned UNESCO’s Star of Outstanding Award and the Spirit of Culture Award in 2024, continues to evolve with new local touches.

This year, audiences will encounter the iconic Star Ferry and two playful characters inspired by Ocean Park’s panda twins, Jia Jia and De De, who join Clara and the Nutcracker Prince in a snowy bamboo forest – a whimsical reimagining of a Hong Kong winter. Artistic Director Septime Webre’s version relocates the classic tale to a historic Mid-Levels home, unfolding through recognisably local scenes from lion dancing and dim sum culture to the Cheung Chau Bun Festival, all set to Tchaikovsky’s beloved score.

Ahead of the 22-performance run from 12–28 December, an exhibition in the Hong Kong Cultural Centre foyer showcases sketches, concept art, and creative inspirations behind this much-loved production.

[China Travelogue] Rare Migratory Birds Grace Jiangsu’s Mazhou Island

Rare migratory birds have been sighted on Mazhou Island in east China’s Jiangsu Province, where scientific cameras recently captured striking images of two nationally protected species: the Ciconia boyciana and the black-faced spoonbill.

Footage shows the Ciconia boyciana, distinguished by its white plumage and black bill and wings, wandering calmly along the shoreline. Nearby, a black-faced spoonbill, or Platalea minor, can be seen by the water’s edge, using its long, flat beak to gracefully preen its feathers.

Experts say both species are pausing in Jiangsu to replenish their energy during migration. They are expected to remain on Mazhou Island for another week or two before continuing their journey, offering a rare and encouraging glimpse of the region’s flourishing ecological environment.

[China Travelogue] Redwoods and Seagulls Paint Qingdao’s Winter

In Qingdao, northern China, winter unfolds like a painting, with Taiping Mountain’s dawn redwoods and the seagulls at Zhanqiao Pier providing the richest colours. Rows of straight, waterside redwoods shift from yellow to crimson, and when sunlight strikes their leaves, the trees and their reflections on the lake create a dreamlike, mirrored world.

The redwoods stand like brushstrokes across the hillside, each ripple of colour adding a new shade to the scene. Visitors stroll the paths, cameras ready to capture the glowing foliage and the perfectly reflected compositions on the water.

Along the coast at Zhanqiao Pier, the city’s seagulls add a lively white contrast. Since 1994, Qingdao’s “Action to Conserve Seagulls” has welcomed wintering flocks, and after three decades, more than 100,000 seagulls now spend the season here. Locals and tourists delight in close, friendly encounters with these feathered visitors, making Qingdao’s cold months feel bright and alive.

[China Thrills] Sichuan’s Indoor, Outdoor Skiing Drives Winter Tourism Boom

Southwest China’s Sichuan Province is experiencing a lively winter tourism boom, driven by a blend of expansive indoor ski centres and scenic high-altitude resorts. These destinations are pairing winter sports with local culture and cuisine, from snow hotpot to traditional games, creating fresh opportunities for rural development.

In Dujiangyan, a 50,000-square-metre indoor resort is drawing visitors with professional facilities, including an advanced 21-degree slope and seven runs for all skill levels. “The slopes are excellent… I never encounter icy patches,” said ski enthusiast Liu Fang. Families are also flocking to its 5,000-square-metre snow park, while new snow-themed activities and on-site hotpot add to the appeal. Manager Yu Ronghui said the venue now offers study tours, youth competitions, and themed packages to broaden participation.

In Aba Prefecture, outdoor resorts are flourishing. Wenchuan’s Qiangrengu Ski Resort, at over 3,200 metres, offers a four-month season, upgraded slopes, and performances showcasing Qiang culture. Nearby Heishui’s Dagu Glacier area has expanded into an “ice-snow plus sports plus culture” hub, featuring snowmobile rides, a 4,860-metre ski run, ice sculptures and VR experiences amid dramatic glacier views.

[Green Highlights] Major Progress Marked in China’s Wild Plant Conservation

China has made major strides in conserving wild plants during the last five years, with most key species now under effective protection, according to the National Forestry and Grassland Administration. As one of the world’s most botanically diverse countries, China has expanded both in-situ (original location) and ex-situ (non-original location) efforts, safeguarding 65 percent of higher plant communities and 80 percent of nationally key protected species.

More than 300 endangered plants have been reintroduced into the wild. The country’s first five national parks now offer in-situ protection for 141 priority species, while over 300 additional habitat conservation sites have been set up beyond nature reserves, improving ecosystem integrity and connectivity. More than 100 extremely small-population species have also undergone rescue conservation.

At the same time, a national ex-situ conservation network has taken shape around the China National Botanical Garden and South China National Botanical Garden. “By 2035, our species collection will reach 30,000,” said He Ran, noting this will place China among the world’s leading botanical gardens. A new plant germplasm resource bank, designed to store 70,000 species, will underpin the country’s future biodiversity protection.

[China Travelogue] Winter’s Gold: A Cliffside Temple’s Radiance

Perched upon Daciyan in Jiande, Zhejiang, lies a sight of awe-inspiring beauty—a centuries-old cliffside temple suspended between heaven and earth. Before it stands a majestic ginkgo tree soaring forty meters high. The temple is partly carved into the rock face, partly cantilevered over the void, its dark tiles dusted with fallen ginkgo leaves. The precipice, the ancient sanctuary, and the timeless tree merge into a picture of such classical perfection that it holds the gaze captive.

This venerable ginkgo, more than seven hundred years old, has now entered its most radiant season. Its foliage has transformed into luminous gold, shimmering softly under the winter sun. As photography enthusiasts recount, the scene has drawn them back winter after winter. The most magical moments arrive at dawn or after rain—the gentle morning light reveals exquisite details of the architecture and leaves, while the post-rain sunshine, filtering through the golden canopy, bathes the temple in an ethereal, almost divine glow.
