lightcraft - Love, Again

This one’s massive! The second track I have mastered for my Indonesian brothers lightcraft! This song’s about finding/rekindling that spark in your relationship or whatever it is that means the most to you in your life. Super proud of this one!

Thanks to these guys and mixing engineer/producer Rimaldi for such a positive collaborative experience. We will do this again!

🎚️Make Bus Compression your friend! 🙌

👀 Bus compression is all about glue, giving your mix a polished, unified feel without squashing the life out of it. Instead of compressing every track heavily, you apply gentle compression to your mix bus (or subgroups) so all elements breathe together.

🔧 How to Do It:

Use a low ratio (1.5:1–2:1) and aim for 1–3dB of gain reduction.
Set a slow attack to let transients punch through and a release that matches the groove of your song.
Mix into the compressor, adjusting levels with it on, for natural balance.

❓ Why You Should Use It:

Bus compression helps control overall dynamics, smooth out peaks, and create a consistent “glued” sound. It’s a finishing touch that can make even raw mixes feel intentional and pro.

💯 The Effect on Your Mix:

When done right, bus compression makes your mix feel like a finished record, tight, balanced, and cohesive, while still keeping energy and punch intact.

101 ways to embarrass your daughter – Number 36 – Write a song about her!

You’ve heard the original, now prepare yourselves for the alternate master of “Daughter” done by yours truly. I had the pleasure of meeting Irish Australian artist Liam Naughton early this year in Perth and working with him on the alternate master of his track “Daughter”, a song cryptically about…his daughter. This is a more subtle take on the track compared to the first master.

The end result? Still a beautiful, heartfelt tribute from a father to his daughter. Check it out!

Mixing: Patrick Carre (Artisan Music Studios)
Mastering: Li Heng Chan (Productive Outcomes Music)

👀 Separation and Control of Elements

⚠️ At the mastering stage, you don’t want to make massive adjustments to the mix.

✅ Apart from making it louder, you want to maintain a separation and control of each element. What does this mean?

Pay special attention to:

1️⃣ Kick and bass - These elements can get buried or lost during the limiting process, are they still punching through?

2️⃣ Mid to high end frequencies - if not tamed, these can potentially overpower every other element in your pursuit of that mastering “shine”.

Comment below or DM me “Master” to get your track mastered!

The human element is important in every meeting and interaction, apart from understanding the artists/bands’ music and vision intimately, I take the time to know them as people.

I have been fortunate in my career so far to have worked with artists who are committed, reasonable and open to collaboration and communication, these are things I do not take for granted. The end result is a product that is bigger than both of us - a product that lasts forever, long after our time on earth is done.

DM me “release” if you want your project mixed and/or mastered, I got you!

During a recent visit back to my hometown Hong Kong, I was able to visit melodic death veterans Cursed Eyes' studio and do a mixing session with them. After mixing and mastering "Specter's Garden", their first single in years, they have a few more coming up in the second half of 2025 with me.

Many thanks to these guys for their hospitality! 🔥

Ready for your second half of 2025? DM me "release" and we'll discuss your project. 🔥

👀 Headphones and studio monitors are must use tools in the mixing mastering process, but how do you know WHEN to use them and WHAT to look listen out for through these two devices? Here it is!

🔊 Studio Monitors
1️⃣ Low end balance: Kick and bass together
2️⃣ Overall levels: Vocal to instrument balance
3️⃣ Depth and space: How instruments sit

⚠️ Watch out: Room acoustics can skew your perception if untreated

🎧 Headphones
1️⃣ Micro detail: Clicks, pops, mouth noises
2️⃣ Sibilance: “S” and “T” sounds
3️⃣ Reverb tails: Decay, muddy buildup

⚠️ Watch out: Stereo image can feel wider than it really is

🔥 Now you are on your way to a better mix!

You hear the room, not just the mix. Even with great monitors, your ears are also hearing:

🔄 Reflections
🎢 Bass buildup
🌊 Phase smearing
👀 Your mix decisions are only as accurate as your environment.

⚠️ Bad Room = Bad Decisions
❌ Over-EQing
❌ Fixing problems that aren’t there
❌ Missing real issues that are
👀 Your gear isn’t broken, your room is dishonest.

🔥 Your room is part of your signal chain.
⚠️ If it’s muddy, your mix will be too.
✅ Clear room = Clear ears = Better results.

Don’t ignore the location you mix/master in! Let me know below if this changed your perspective on mixing and mastering or not!
