This week's show (3.05pm-6 pm), my penultimate one on Saturday afternoons on Radio 3, the weekly smattering of global reggae releases includes some great collaborative singles. Singer-songwriter Double Tiger, of Brooklyn, meets Jamaican studio gurus and session musicians Sly Dunbar and & Robbie Shakespeare for the bass and drum-driven single ‘Yearning’; in another US-JA combo, Flying Vipers of Boston, feature Earl Sixteen vocals in ‘Persistency’. King Kong of Jamaica lends his vocals to German producer Paul Lupa’s ‘Ancient Anunnaki’. Also hear UK dancehall-style ‘Judas’ by Junior Dangerous. And with Kingston Sound System’s release of ‘Classic Hits in a Reggae Groove’ (pictures) this week, we’ll hear 2 more of its tracks that – using some of Jamaica’s best session musicians – set well-known 1980s pop song vocals against redevised skanking audio.
After 4.30pm, the weekly old-school hip-hop double-play goes back to the ‘80s with a couple of lesser-played grooves, by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, and by The Funky 4 + 1 (featuring Jazzy Jeff and MC Sha-Rock).
