“Producerism,” we can call this, by analogy with consumerism. What we’re now persuaded to consume, most conspicuously, are the means to create. And the democratization of taste ensures that no one has the right (or inclination) to tell us when our work is bad. A universal grade inflation now obtains: we’re all swapping A-minuses all the time, or, in the language of Facebook, “likes.”

Hard-working artisan, solitary genius, credentialed professional—the image of the artist has changed radically over the centuries. What if the latest model to emerge means the end of art as we have known it?

===========

About "Ancient Character and Figure?"

Kamie Cheng, the artist, is deeply interested in Chinese culture. She chose the Xiaozhuan characters that were created from the Qin Dynasty as the starting point, to explore its integrating compositions and the evolving changes of the Chinese written characters.

In the process, the artist discovered some fascinating stories: After Emperor Qin Shihuang’s historic reunification of the six countries, he appointed his senior officials Li Si, Zhao Gao and Wu Mu Jing to be responsible for the designs and constructs of the universal common characters Xiaozhuan; during which the evolvement of each Chinese characters played a significant importance to its development process.

Thereafter, senior official Zhao Gao deliberately presented a deer in front of the Second Emperor of Qin, while openly claiming that in fact it was a horse. The intentional assertion was to test the loyalty in the ministers and examining the submissiveness of the court. With composition of clay as media,

The Artist combined historical tales with Qin Dynasty’s arts and cultural elements to record similar stories from the past and the present; and rethinking the judgmental perspectives of authenticity and fabrications.

===========
About the Artist:

Kamie Cheng was born in Hong Kong and completed the Diploma in Fine Art from the Hong Kong Art School in 2004.

She later graduated from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology University with the Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art) in 2014 (programme co-presented with Hong Kong Art School).

Creations is the neutral medium for Kamie to sharing thought perplexities, while bridging the channel of chatterbox and opening dialogues with the public audience on ideological exchanges.
