About "Ancient Character and Figure?"
Kamie Cheng, the artist, is deeply interested in Chinese culture. She chose the Xiaozhuan characters that were created from the Qin Dynasty as the starting point, to explore its integrating compositions and the evolving changes of the Chinese written characters.
In the process, the artist discovered some fascinating stories: After Emperor Qin Shihuang’s historic reunification of the six countries, he appointed his senior officials Li Si, Zhao Gao and Wu Mu Jing to be responsible for the designs and constructs of the universal common characters Xiaozhuan; during which the evolvement of each Chinese characters played a significant importance to its development process.
Thereafter, senior official Zhao Gao deliberately presented a deer in front of the Second Emperor of Qin, while openly claiming that in fact it was a horse. The intentional assertion was to test the loyalty in the ministers and examining the submissiveness of the court. With composition of clay as media,
The Artist combined historical tales with Qin Dynasty’s arts and cultural elements to record similar stories from the past and the present; and rethinking the judgmental perspectives of authenticity and fabrications.
