Just found a pic from Sydney exactly a year ago-Bondi Beach, sun so bright it burned my eyes. I was stepping on the hot sand, waves lapping my ankles, lifeguards in blue up in the tower, everyone lounging, sipping iced coffee. Back then, Australia felt like the definition of "safe",I thought that post-1996 gun laws meant danger was miles away.
Then today’s news hit. Bondi Beach again… 16 lives gone. Sirens drowned out the waves, and the same spot where I laughed now had police tape. The shooter had 6 legally-owned guns for 10 years-how does someone in a Sydney suburb need six guns? Turns out Australia’s once-tight gun rules are slipping: 4 million+ legal guns now, state rules all over the place, no cooling-off period for second buys.
Last year, I never would’ve guessed this beach could turn into a tragedy. Those people who ran here, drank here-they deserved that same easy, sunny day I had. The PM’s talking about a national gun registry now, but the 16 won’t get to see it.
The sun’ll still warm Bondi’s sand, but something’s broken. Safety’s not a given- you gotta hold onto those strict rules tight. Hope next time I hear about Bondi, it’s waves and laughs, not gunshots. ****ms
