The first World University Animation Awards (WUAA), presented by Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU), will officially launch in September 2025.

HKMU is widely acclaimed for its creative arts education, which has nurtured creative talent, many of whom have become celebrated literary authors, film and animation makers, visual artists and designers. They cover important ethical issues in the Humanities in their writing, and visual art and moving image works.

You can submit your animated short film on FilmFreeway NOW, and it’s FREE! The deadline is 20 MAY 2025.

WUAA Knowledge Hub Series: The incredible journey of Jiao Zi, the director of China blockbuster "Ne Zha 2"

From difficult beginnings to global success:
🎨 Unwavering passion: Jiao Zi transitioned from pharmacy to animation during his third year at university, driven by pure passion and self-learning.

💪 Perseverance: Despite three years of unemployment, relying on his mother's financial support, Jiao Zi dedicated himself to mastering animation.

🏆 Breakthrough moment: In 2009, his 16-minute animated short “See Through” won 30 prestigious awards, which was the watershed moment of his career.

🏢 Building a Legacy: Jiao Zi founded Jiaokeli Animated Studio, leading to the creation of hits like the "Ne Zha" series.

🚨 Submission requirements for the 1st World University Animation Awards (WUAA) 第一屆世界大學動畫獎報名須知
🔊 Call for submissions: 17 March – 20 May 2025

🖊️ Eligibility: Open to college/university current students and graduates from the 2024-25 academic year; graduates from the 2023-2024 academic year.
🖊️ Production Date: The work must have been produced on or after September 1, 2023. Verification: A Student Card or Student Verification will be required.
🖊️ Submission Format: The award accepts only online digital submissions.
🖊️ Entry Limit: Each director is allowed to submit one entry.
🖊️ Duration: Work must not exceed 15 minutes in length.
🖊️ Language Requirements: All submitted animations must include embedded subtitles in English.
🖊️ Animation Technique: Only animated short films will be accepted (the films must have been made using animation, regardless of the technique).
🖊️ Resolution/Dimensions: Submissions must be in 1080p, 2K, or 4K resolution.
🖊️ Codec: Acceptable codecs include H.264/AVC, H.265/HEVC, or ProRes 422 HQ.
🖊️ Frame Rate: The frame rate must be set at either 24 or 25 frames per second.
