5 years ago Official Assemblage 23 dropped Welcome, Apocalypse, a musical manifestation of the Covid-19 pandemic. A banger so fu***ng great that I wore out the bits and bytes of the digital album I crowdfunded.
However, this might be even better. This is exactly what it says on the tin - a song about tolerance, a signature A23 expansion of a single-word concept, dominating both the brain and the body.
And especially with the recent shooting of Charlie Kirk, the discussion on tolerance rings so - SO much louder.
So, Tom Shear presents to you:
TOLERATE
At last, the big reveal
The mask lay at your feet
The metamorphosis
Regrettably complete
Your self shown to the world
Your honor set ablaze
I think we've reached the point in time
When you and I part ways
CHORUS
I don't care to understand you
You have shown me who you are
The harm imbued in your beliefs
Is a burning bridge too far
I can't abide the bigotry
I can't abide the hate
There's a limit to what the tolerant
Themselves will tolerate
Opposing viewpoints
Aren't a bad thing in themselves
They form the means
By which humanity's propelled
But once a point of view
Steps on somebody's neck
It looks a lot like prejudice
And that, I must reject
(CH)
I thought I knew you
But I guess that I was wrong
Perhaps I never knew
Who you were all along
You think that you're a rebel
Well, color me impressed
But if we can't agree on decency
Then what do we have left?
(CH)
