Mazi Gburugburu Storms Back to Imo: ₦15 Million for Ozuzu, Major Defection Rocks Opposition Politics as APP Tightens Grip Ahead of Primaries
The return of Dr. Chima Matthew Amadi, popularly known as Mazi Gburugburu, to Imo State this weekend was far more than a homecoming. It was a calculated political statement delivered at a critical moment, just days before the Action People’s Party (APP) begins its primaries ahead of the 2027 elections.
In Ozuzu, Ngor-Okpala, the message was unmistakable: APP is organised, expanding, and fully prepared for the battles ahead.
The first powerful signal came from the traditional institution. The Ndi Nze, Ichie, and Obilobi of Ozuzu autonomous community formally received and blessed Dr. Amadi. In Igbo political culture, such endorsements are deeply significant. They represent moral approval from the custodians of the land and send a clear message that leadership rooted in the people still matters.
Beyond ceremony, the visit carried immediate impact. In the presence of the Orisheze of Ozuzu, Dr. Amadi committed ₦15 million toward two pressing community needs — direct support for Ozuzu market women and the construction of a borehole to improve water access. It was practical politics focused on real human needs, not empty promises.
The day also witnessed a major political realignment as Hon. Chief Dr. Casmir Nneji Okereafor (Oputa) officially defected to APP and The Mazi Organisation (TMO). Surrounded by party leaders and stakeholders, Chief Nneji openly pledged loyalty to APP and committed himself to delivering victory for Dr. Amadi and other party candidates in 2027.
Political defections at moments like this are never accidental. They are signals of where momentum is moving. Chief Nneji’s decision reinforces the growing belief across Imo that APP is becoming the most credible and organised opposition force in the state.
Earlier in the day, Dr. Amadi arrived through Sam Mbakwe Airport and rode home alongside local bike riders who came out to welcome him — another reminder of the grassroots connection that continues to define his politics. He does not approach the people as a distant politician, but as one of them.
That connection is now translating into structure, loyalty, and visible growth across communities.
As APP heads into its primaries, the party appears united, grounded, and strategically positioned. While others struggle with internal fractures and unstable alliances, APP enters the season with grassroots support, traditional backing, expanding membership, and a clear political identity.
